Trikes: Berchet, Puky or Kettler ? hub is confused.

This page has all of them. I think they're all probably excellent, but is there any particular make / model which is particularly excellent ?

Oh, and in the Berchet range you can have wide 'stroller style' handles or narrower ones:
these two are wide . This one is narrower: like this .

I do hope this will be quicker than the Mountain Buggy debate.

PS - Rubber tyres are quieter than plastic tyres, but do anyone make them with inflatable tyres ? I love inflatable tyres. LOL.

spit it out, filly... Are you asserting they are a complete waste of time ? LOL

sorky - the handles on the others look slightly better for the old and infirm with dodgy backs (like me). Did you try any of the others ?

suggest you start another thread - did your child like his/her trike?

ours was a waste of money...our ds never got the hang of pedalling it although adored his scooter from age 2 and bike from age 3

go for it if you just want somewhere different to push her around on...or buy a cosy coupe if you want a set of wheels for her to plooter about on (ds always preferred the pink girl version of the cosy coupe coz it's got a sun roof...)

tassis · 11/09/2006 21:48

(or buy her a wheelly bug - now they're seriously cool)

hub2dee · 11/09/2006 21:48

Awwwwww... we put her on a friend's plastic firengine push along thingy the other day and she loved it, so I thought 'get that girl a trike'...

hmmm

we did exactly the same as you when ds was around 15 months.

and no, he didn't have the foggiest

and his feet didn't touch the ground

BUT

we have lots of lovely photo

hub2dee · 11/09/2006 21:49

Is the dirty secret coming out then - trikes are an underused pos ?

OP posts:
hoxtonchick · 11/09/2006 21:49

get her a pushalong then! dd loves her wheelybug actually, though her legs are even a bit short to make it work properly.

hub2dee · 11/09/2006 22:08

I thought one of the benefits though with the trike is I don't need to bend over double just to keep her safe on the thing IYSWIM. With a harness and parental handle thingy, I get not to see my osteopath, she gets not to bump her tush !

Ours was used a lot when ds was your dd's age, did save my back & I thought it was a godsend at times. We often took it to the park if driving, to the postbox etc. And as your dd is not walking yet, even 6 months constant use makes it a good buy, I figure we will use a lot with ds2 arriving in Dec. But must admit ds has hardly used at all in recent months & he's too big for the ride on, wld love to afford like a bike or wheely bug for this transition period before he can ride a bike.

Blu · 12/09/2006 14:05

Our Trike was underused, certainly. If I was doing it all again, I'd get a 'sit-on push trike'of some sort, the ones they just scoot with thier legs (have a nice wooden one of those for sale too!) or a wheelie bug for indoors, and then a 'likeabike' style thing once they were 3. Then get them straight on to a bike (Puky) with no stabilisers.

Blu · 12/09/2006 14:07

Yeah, Hub, get a fairly standard, cheap high st trike for fairly short-term use, and then get a likeabike.

tassis · 12/09/2006 14:07

oooh yes, get a wooden galt trike that you push with your feet. they're fab. ds got into his about 15 months and still loves it aged 3.5...

sorkycake · 12/09/2006 19:40

We didn't use a handle as she was 3 when we bought it, just as a precursor to a bike really.
With your dc being so young I would recommend the little tykes car, hideous as it is, all kids love 'em, I reckon.
We also have the wheelie bugs, they're fab but more for indoors.

jabberwocky · 12/09/2006 19:48

We have the Berchet Baby Driver III with the narrow handle. I had wanted the wider one but we couldn't find one. The narrow handle has worked out fine, though and it has really been a wonderful investment.

littlemadam · 12/09/2006 20:51

We've got a Puky, which is great, we got the plastic tyres, but they do inflatable, and wish we had gone for that option!! Has a steering lock and also freewheel option for those too small to pedal. We also got a little platform that slots over the pedals for the tinies to rest their feet. We did get a bilious pink colour tho Very well made, and lots of add ons, flags bells etc!!

hub2dee · 13/09/2006 07:13

Went to Toys R Us yesterday - they had the Berchet Too Comfort thing with the stroller-style handle. I thought it was OK but a little too plasticky / twisty with adjustments that weren't the most obvious in the world. I think I'll leave that and try and find a pukey or a Kettler in the next few days...

Not sure I'd trust dd to remain upright on a push-with-the-feet type little trike yet LOL. She rolled over - for the first time ever - YESTERDAY... she has done things at odd times. She rolls over and then scootles into a sitting position, but I think she'd just wobble and eat the pavement if the trike doesn't have a harness, but I imagine she'll have good balance in a few months.

Check out Brixton Cycles they are fantastic and will do a part exchange for a trike when you buy that all important first bike. We loved the Puky with rubber tires- really solid. We live in NW London and make the trip, they are that good!

hub2dee · 14/09/2006 21:11

Needed to drive my dad to Surrey today so popped into this place and bought a Puky CAT 1SL. It has air tyres, a steering lock, a proper foot rest, an adjustable, scooped up seat with back support, a £5 harness option, tipper for toys / crap, a parental control arm thingy and a shovel head to attach onto the control arm to turn it into a, erm, shovel.

Took dd out on it this evening and she was completely delighted. She can't stand up, but tbh I did not think she was in danger sitting on it. The harness can be tightened around her tummy and I'm trying to follow a 'if you're not holding the handleabrs this thing ain't movin'' message LOL.

The parental control arm is OK but not amazing, there is still a certain degree of play in it and it would have been nice if it was more rigid (perhaps the Kettler has a better / stiffer arm, I don't know)... but overall I'm happy with it.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

i wonder how this trike thang worked out hub/????

hub2dee · 07/04/2007 17:38

Hi Otter,

dd loves her trike. It was a good buy.

The front wheel can either be free-wheeling (with pedals turning) or locked (wheels disengaged from hub), but this is not a 100% dead-centre perfect lock, which is a little irritating as you're always trying to make corrections to the direction of travel.

I've seen a few others out and about since buying this, but the combination of air tyres, decent seat, harness, foot rest (for pre-pedalling) still make the Puky (and the model I got in particular) a decent, if expensive, buy.

hth.

If I was making anything that would be bought by parents, I don't believe I'd call it a Puky......

misdee · 07/04/2007 17:41

did u get apink one?

hub2dee · 07/04/2007 18:10

Yes, Rusty, is hardly apt, is it. lol misdee - I think it's blue and red and yellow aktually - oh and if you come here for the shoot you're welcome to stay for lunch / tea / whatever.
