Altering too large curtains??? Help needed

I am looking to buy some lovely curtains off ebay. There are two sets, one is the right width but will need the drop reduced - which seems to me reasonably easy for a dressmaker to do.

The other set will need to have the width reduced as well. Is that easy, or is there is something that I am missing?

Are they tab top, or gathered at the top? If they are gathered, to reduce the width, you may only need to pull the threads through the tape at the top a bit more. It will make them fuller though.

Alternatively, you can take the tape off the tops, alter the width and then sew the tape back on the tops again.

You probably need to speak to a dressmaker to find out how much it would cost. No point buying bargain curtains and then spending an absolute fortune having them altered.

To change curtains length, it's easiest to do them from the top rather than alter the professionally done bottom. Well I found this anyway. Had a pair of cream jacquard (sp) full length ones for my front room bay and got them half price. I have a radiator underneath window. Lay them somewhere completely flat, to get it right, put pins where you need to cut, cut & hem then tack tape back on.
