I realise in the grand scheme of things this is only a minor problem, but in the house of Aero, it's a major disaster as mash is a regular feature on the teatime menu, and the last new one I bought thinking I'd go trendy, was useless - flimsy and not small enough mashing holes, so I just went back to my very old faithful, until tonight that is.

So all you mashing experts, I challenge you to find me a new, all singing, all dancing spud masher please......TIA

Potato masher here or potato ricer here .

lilymolly · 07/09/2006 21:36

I got potato ricer from Matalan last week very cheap and works really well

Blimmin' loads at Amazon . The Cuisipro one looks very sturdy.

Aero · 07/09/2006 21:44

Think it's got to be sturdy metal. Nylon 's not for me. Like the look of the lakeland one ! Not sure I could get used to that type of handle , but it does look strong.

Oh gawd - I'm getting anal over a masher!

Sadly, This is our local Matalan.

just use a fork, it's good for toning your arms

I have that very potato ricer and it is the dog's wotnots for completely smooth mashed potato - but it is a faff to wash (not sure I could be bothered if I didn't have a dishwasher).

Aero · 07/09/2006 22:02

We have a dishwasher, but it looks like you have to mash one spud at a time, which would seem like a faff I think. like the idea of it for eggs though.

Now eggs SEA, I do mash with a fork.

I understand about mash - it is my children's ultimate comfort food! They like DP's better than mine, though - and when I discovered how much butter he puts in it I realized why! I use a ricer - v cheap from TKMAXX - but the Lakeland one looks good. DP uses an old cheapie from Woolworths - he considers the ricer an abomination. I also sometimes make mash with my hand mixer if it's out - lovely and smooth if hard to wash.

If you cut your potatoes up to boil them you can put a fair few chunks in at a time - it's pretty fast. Nigella tells you to leave the skins on and the ricer separates them - personally I find fishing the skins out of the ricer a faff so I still peel them first.
