Prams for boys

In the recent ELC catalogue, I noticed that they are now selling strollers for boys. DH and DM say no way should I even contemplate buying that for our 2yo DTS. However, when I pick them up from nursery they are happily pushing prams and strollers around. They just see it as a toy. However, I guess there is no getting away from the fact that it is socially acceptable for only girls to own a pram.

I should add that I would buy the pram and doll if DH agreed with it and it is the "getting his agreement" that I need to work on. DH does housework, cook etc so he is a modern man except when it comes to dolls!

However, he won't even wear sandals because "he is not a girl". Now that is inexplicable.

Does your DH push prams though? Or a stroller?

ds and several of his friends have the blue ELC stroller.

at a fiver it's one of the best value toys out there

ds was rubbish at walking as a toddler but used to push Bob the builder, or Postman Pat or a fire engine (manly toys!) quite happily!

DH does push the pram, even insists on it when I am with him because "it's the manly thing to do". He will take the boys out to the park in the pram on his etc but refuses point blank to go to their music group because hardly any men attend.

pushes the prambecaue'it's the manly thing to do?'

not being funny but does sound like he has some issues about notions of masculinity that he could do with talking about.

When my ds is old enough I have no problem with getting him a pram in fact he'll probably play with dd's which is pink I don't see the problem and don't see why it should be blue either.

it is socially acceptable for boys to have a buggy

and for men to carry / push their children in public

you're being a numpty .. stop it immediately

i bought one for ds (a blue checked one) - much to the disgust of my dh. ds loves to play with it - we have it as one of the garden toys as don't have much room inside.

i cannot understand dh's problem.... dh insists on pushing the pram if we are all out together.. so what's the difference?

I'm actually very disappointed that ELC have jumoed on the same band wagon as everyone else and branded toys as girls or boys. Why don;t they just make tys in neutral colours FGS?

Agree with Twiglett on the grown men pushing prams thing. My freind's DH got a bit miffed when his DS was given a toy pushchair (by me ) He reckoned it would turn him gay or something..... cos of course you see a lot of gay men pushing babies around don't you?! duh

3strikesout · 04/09/2006 19:39

I keep thinking of getting one, as ds1 and 2 seem really to like them. Only reason I haven't is because we can hardly move for push toys. If it's only a fiver I think I will though. I would never have thought of it as a girls' toy unless it was really frilly.

lilmamma · 04/09/2006 21:30

All my boys have played with toy prams, they usually put a teddy in it,or toy cars !!Mine even had a tea set each,my dad said tea sets are for girls,he is of the old school,i said dad if he turns out gay its because of his genetic makeup not because he pushes a pram and likes tea sets..I had to think twice about my lipstaick lol..

MrsSpoon · 04/09/2006 21:33

My DS2 has a buggy, he loves it.

MerlinsBeard · 04/09/2006 21:43

ds1 has a blue stroller (the £5 one) and 2 dolls. one is from when i was pg with ds2 so that he had his own "baby" to wash etc but the other came complete witha pink outfit and bottles etc and he loves it! sleeps next to him every night!

I would rather nurture their gentle caring side and glare at people who laugh at him pushing his trolley down the street than have him high kicking teenage mutant ninja turtle stylee.

DS2 also now a lover of the trolley and they argue over who's turn it is to feed the doll!!!

(they are 3 yrs and 17 months)

UCM · 05/09/2006 08:07

DS has a blue stroller, much to DH disgust. He will be getting a doll soon as well so that he has a baby too!! Again much to DH disgust.

You know when you read about boys who were pushed to be 'real men'.....have issues.

DS doesn't know if he is a boy or a girl yet anyway, he is only little.
