quick question on wet-suit care

Ds got his first wet-suit today and played in the sea for 2 hours It is great but didnt come with any care instructions.
Can someone tell me what do I do with it now? He wants to use it again tomorrow, but should it be washed and can it go in the washing machine?
Any tips gratefully appreciated thanks.

I just dry them out properly, which can take quite a long time if weather is bad, particularly with long wetsuits. Shorties generally dry more quickly. Then I put away ready for the next time. I confess I've never actually washed a wetsuit, I've always figured they get wet enough in the sea.

We have a motley collection of long and shorty wetsuits, some of which have survived three or four children and are still going strong, so we can't be doing anything too badly wrong.

I wouldn't worry about it if he's going to wear it the next day, but if it's going to be put away for longer than that, I'd try to rinse it out (in the shower, or outside with the hose or something), and make sure it's dried properly before it's put away.

dh surfs.
he looks so fit in his wet suit...

sorry..
rinse the suit out in the bath with the shower attatchment then hang it on a decent coat hanger to dry thoroughly before storing.
If it is not dry tomorrow when he wants to put it back on it will be a nightmare to wrestle him into it and it will feel icky and freezing cold!!

1Baby1Bump · 02/09/2006 22:13

dont put it in the washing machine!!

northstar · 02/09/2006 22:16

Thanks so far
Im sure all the other kids thought my ds looked fit!!!!
So, I'm presuming the tumble drier is out of the question - sorry just joking, but can I hang it in the airing cupboard overnight?

dh is not sure.
he doesnt hang his in there as it was so, so expensive just in case it does something to the neoprene.
i have a cheapo we got from a muck 'n' tat shop in cornwall as i rarely get in the water. i would probably hang my cheapy in the airing cupboard.
depends how much you spent on it!
if it had no care instructions, stick it in there!!
hth
no offence intended anywhere there btw.

MrsMuddle · 02/09/2006 22:34

I hose them down outside to get the snad off, then hang them up on a hanger, either inside or out, and turn them inside out when one side is dry,

northstar · 02/09/2006 22:34

It's a cheapy, so into the airing cupboard it goes..............
Thanks 1baby1bump
ps will let you know if it self-combusts during the night

i will let dh know then if it combusts!!

1Baby1Bump · 02/09/2006 22:38

if it doesnt, his can dry in there from now on too so i wont think there is a bloody robber in the bathroom when i get up for a wee in the night again!!!

geees....

northstar · 05/09/2006 21:30

Wet suit safe and sound
LOL at robber in bathroom, they are a bit odd lurking in the house alright....
Hope you don't get a fright when you open the airing cupboard now!

cheers northstar!
will let him know. the wetsuit will now be treated as a wet suit, not as a real life surfing buddy!

aDAdOnMumsnet · 05/09/2006 21:36

Definitely a good soak in non-salty water before drying. Should prolong its life.

I will give it a good soak in fresh water when i am ready to give up on the summer, but I made ds promise he would swim in the sea until the end of october before I bought the suit LOL!

I've bunged all of mine in the washing machine, low temp, no wash powder, then on the line. They'll then hang in the wardrobe till next year!
We traded one in this year for a bigger one, it was four years old, and the surf shope dude said it was in really good condition! The washing machine must be okay for it then!
