Frosted Glass ...

crystaltips · 24/03/2004 21:07

I am looking to frost a window in the hope of getting some privacy ... too many nosey neighbours !!! BUT I am looking for the stuff that I spray on rather than the "sticky backed plastic" variety ... I'm looking to have an easy life ... I can't even cover the kids exercise books - so how I do a window in the cling film stuff is beyond me !!
SO any one know where I can get the stuff in a can please ??
Thanks

I've used the sticky cling film type stuff and it is far, far easier than covering books, dead easy in fact. I managed it and I'm useless at that sort of thing. Just in case you don't find any spray on stuff.

Thanks CLayhead - where do you get it from .... and doesn't it start going dog-eared at the corners after a while ??

the spray stuff u can get in B & Q, i got it but it was a bit tricky, distance held from glass etc. but cheap
slightly dearer, the film is a better idea and its from Brume, the have a web site, useless at links, but a 2search should bring them up.i guess "brume.co.uk

Do the sticky stuff - honestly, it's really, really easy. I did it above my front door and I'm incredibly klutzy and it looks wonderful, everyone thinks it's expensive frosted glass. It's not like cling film, it's much thicker than that and you don't have to get it perfect immediatly, you can sort of slide it about to get it in the right place and then push any air bubbles out with a credit card. Mine's a couple of years old and looks perfect still. I got mine from Brume and couldn't be more pleased with it (can I have my commission please now?)

The spray stuff is tricky to get even. Get it in B&Q. _ I wish I'd found the plastic stuff.

lou33 · 25/03/2004 16:11

Spray stuff stinks too, and scratches off easily (as my children discovered).

Thanks for the info about Brume I've been after something like this for a while.
Ordinary frosted Fablon isn't sold in a size large enough for the window I want to obscure.
There are also Windowfilm and Macrovitro but I don't think they're diy fitting.
I bought a trial can of Plasti-kote Glass Frosting spray paint (Plasti-kote ) at B&Q (about £5) but haven't used it yet (don't think I'll bother now).

Hello Beety - that's a strange question - can't really see your reasoning - but the answer's no, by the way.

I need to obscure the bathroom windows - double glazed and apparently an "old" gap dimension, therefore difficult to source (that's what the builder said). I wouldn't get away with a cost of £20 per window (unfortunately).

Beety - yes, frosted glass is cheap but it's not so cheap to get someone to take out your window panes and reglaze them with frosted glass- also the Brume stuff comes with patterns etc so we have our house number above our front door and it really does look like made to order etched glass - I've even had people walking past the house ring the doorbell to ask where we had it done! I think that would have been awfully expensive, plus a hassle to get someone to do the work. I have had internal doors (bathroom) done with real frosted glass and it is lovely, but then those doors had to be glazed from scratch anyway.

You can get some really nice frosted glass house numbers and patterned glass like victorian stuff used to be at Creative Glass Guild in Bristol, tel 0871 200 3389, heres a link:

www.creativeglassguild.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=43

They do frosted glass house numbers too, I had my glass re done over my front toor, it looks great!

Armed with a scalpel/razor blade & stencils, I did tractors for the kids' bedroom windows & numbers on the front door. The frosted film was cheap from a local glass/mirror supply shop. Sadly, have just moved to Surrey & my new 30's house already has frosting (most naffly) a go-go. Maybe I'll attack the greenhouse one evening.....could carve out slogans to shock the very nosey neighbours.

Don't forget others like Window Film. Not sure about the spray stuff but you will get a better finish if you have it professionally installed and it doesn't cost too much either!

These people do DIY or a fitted service, and have a whole range of films to keep the sun's glare & heat out, as well as prying eyes! And they work for the Queen, so can't be bad!! www.sun-x.co.uk

Luce1975 · 24/10/2010 23:07

I can personally recommend www.windowfilmsdirect.com

I would get it installed properly as I tryed and made a right mess of it.

Hello Beety

Could you tell me where you got your frosted glass. I have glass squares in my front door but they have wire mesh in them - sounds nice doesn't it! I don't think I can stretch to having them taken out and replaced so am thinking if I can get the right size then I can just put them on top of the existing tiles. Can you tell me where you sourced you glass and if near London recommend the builder who put them in for you.

Thanks, Rachel.
