18866 discount phone calls

I've just picked this up from another MB - it's new to me - makes OneTel look expensive.

Calls to USA - landline or mobile - 1p a minute.
Calls to UK - landlines 1p a min, mobiles 2p at weekends, 10p otherwise
Calls to most of the world - 1p a min to landlines (some are more) - average 15p a min to mobiles (some 10p, some 20p)

Rates listed here .

(Have to dial 18866 before each call. You have to register and then they bill your chosen credit/debit card monthly.)

Wow!Thanks Jan, I have just signed up!

It's good, isn't it, mammya?

Mind you, I was just thinking - on the verge of adding 18866 to all the numbers in the house-phone memory - if you have BT Together, that is cheaper for landlines in the evening (6p an hour) - 18866 is cheaper during the day.

Also for 0870 numbers - I think with BT Together they're only 4p a minute - on 18866 they're 7p.

0845 are 3p on 18866 and that's probably the same as BT.

I was thinking of using it mostly for international calls anyway, as all my relatives and lots of friends are abroad (my DB in Japan, so 1p/min excellent!)

My niece is in Hong Kong, I must make sure my SIL knows about this! (also 1p a min )

And I don't have BT together anyhow. I was using Planet Talk unitl now but this is better!

It sounds too good to be true! I'm almost suspicious. Am with one-tel atm but am not sure whether I'm tied to them for any period of time. Does anybody know?

madgirl · 23/03/2004 21:24

hi choc box - i am about to ditch BT for calls and go to tele2, have been looking at all the rates. for international this one that JanH has told us about seems fantastic - to answer your query, i am pretty sure one-tel don't hold you to a contract. hth

Janh · 24/03/2004 09:33

chocbox, I have Onetel just on a dial-up basis, like this one - they do also have deals where you pay a monthly fee for cheaper calls - which do you have?

I pay £13.99 per month but think I'm committed for a year - and only started a couple of months ago. Only problem with 18866 is that you have to remember to dial this first - no plug in box or automatic dial ... but great rates.

We use Telediscount for all our international phone calls and it's seriously cheap. You just dial an access number (normally an 0845 number) and for most places it's then 1p a minute on your normal phone bill.

chocbox · 24/03/2004 10:49

Not sure how access numbers work but aren't you then paying for the duration of an 0845 call as well as the one you make?

Sari · 24/03/2004 10:58

Chocbox - we just pay the cost of the local call. That's it.

madgirl · 24/03/2004 11:19

Sari, how do you get it?

Sari · 24/03/2004 12:04

Madgirl, just go to www.telediscount.co.uk and find the number to call for the country you want. Then you dial it when you want to make the call and they ask you to put in the number you want to get through to. you don't have to subscribe or anything.

the website has all the rates for landlines and mobiles everywhere.

It's very good if you're always making calls to a specific country, ie same access number always, but probably a bit of a pain if you keep having to look up different numbers.
