I have made a list of thing's i need to buy, i have some thing's from DS and from my sisters but some thing's im buying new whith our maternity grant.
What can you recomend brandwise, im not a snob it doesn't have to be a popular make just as long as it does the job!

Breast Pump
Breast Pad
Bottles
Steriliser
Moses basket bedding
Front Carrier
Reusable nappies ( i have wraps just need actual nappies and liners)
Maternity Sanitary Towels
Nipple Cream

What did you get and did it do the job well?

Do not over buy bottles, when pregnabt with dts, I bought 18 wide neck Avent bottles, and they hated the, the hospital advised me that a lot of newborns prefer the latex teats as opposed to the silicone ones, as they are much softer, I easily bought over 30 bottles before I found one they would drink from.

Breast Pump - avent
Breast Pad - used m/care which were cheap and fine, though would have to admit that my freebie lansinoh sample was superior
Bottles - tommee tippee closer to nature
Steriliser - avent microwave
Front Carrier - baby bjorn
Maternity Sanitary Towels - tesco or night-time normal ones
Nipple Cream - lansinoh

I used Always Ultra Nighttime. To begin with you may need to double layer them so you can well do without unnecessary bulk iyswim. Moses basket stuff came from Mothercare but got blankets etc large enough so could use them in carrycot/pushchair too. Sterliser - used cold water tablets in a plastic container to begin with then had an Avent microwave one but it depends how often and where you need to use one. It wasn't anything fancy so am sure a cheaper m/wave one would have been just as good. Kamillosan nipple cream was soothing and good for use on baby skin too.

Breast Pump - Medela Electric Pump - was very good & much quicker

Breast Pad - any Tesco, sainsburies etc

Bottles - need narrow ones for the Medela but fed EBM from Avent wide neck - you can get a starter pack with a couple iof teats.

Steriliser - microwave one from a friend

Moses basket bedding - babies R us & hand me downs

Front Carrier - BabyBjorn - very good

Reusable nappies ( i have wraps just need actual nappies and liners)

Maternity Sanitary Towels - Mothercare

Nipple Cream - Lansinoh (but didn't need it so couldn't say if good)

used all of it well & was happy with it all.

Good luck!!!

b/pads - get washable ones. Mine were from Boots - about £5 for pack of 5 but loads more absorbent than dispy ones and stopped me getting excema on my boobs cos the disp's are plastic-backed and sweaty.

Nip cream - gotta be lansinoh. About £8 but FAB.

I'd go with a sling rather than a carrier - getting tiny babes into the carrier was awful and then they hang in front of your arms/view so you can't do anything.

Charlee: I just invested in an electric breast pump anfet 10 weeks of faffing with a manual: Deffo get one I bought Medela its fab!
Also if using disposable breast pads found the jonhsons ones are slightly more expensive but really soft!
Bottles: Avent anti-colic!!
maternity sanitary towels: suprisingly sainsburys own (with wings!!)
Nipple cream: Lansinoh, but be careful if prone to thrush, I found out after a week of agonising thrush in my boobs that nipple creams contribute towards it as it keeps the nipple warm n moist hence ideal breeding ground for thrush!

Muslin cloths ! I cannot recommend them enough -excellent for all sorts of jobs from mopping up milky sick to making an impromptu sunshade!

Both my two were sicky babies though so I couldn't walk across a room with them without taking a muslin cloth with me

skerriesmum · 29/08/2006 13:20

Just a word about sanitary towels... apparently the only ones that don't have plastic in them are the maternity kind... mil got me Always and they irritated my episiotomy (sorry tmi!)
The most useful thing I had was a cordless phone! Lets you breastfeed or walk around with baby while talking.

chocolateshoes · 29/08/2006 13:21

btw be careful if sterilizing your Medela breastpump in boiling water as I boiled mine dry & it melted - trying to multi-task!
