DS (5) has started to take alot of interest in geography, so I am getting him a globe for christmas, and a world map for his wall, but I would also like a book containing a world atlas, a child friendly one that explains, coubtries, continents etc.

Dorling Kindersley do one which looks pretty good, wf!

Plenty on Amazon but no idea which would be best.

Oh, there's also a First Atlas which may be a better starting point for a 5-yr-old.

Hi waterfalls,

The only one I could find, but it's quite good, was 'The Usborne Little Atlas'
This is as much as I could find when i googled: Usborne

It's a lovely book with some great pictures in-my brother also bought the 'Talking Globe' for my ds last christmas and he loves that and plays with it every day. I'd really recommend it.

hth

The Usborne one on JackieNo's link sounds good

thanks so much, these are great sites, very handy as he is also facinated in space and planets, so should be able to find some good books for that too

At age 8 ds was obsessed with atlases and maps - bought him loads over the years and he absorbed TONS of knowledge. His favourite activity for months was writing lists of countries and their capital cities. His teachers gradually broadened his interest and he has become extremely knoweldgeable about history and languages. He has just got his A levels - in French, German and History and is going to study Russian at Nottingham uni. He has been studying Russian as a hobby for the last two years!!!
I am soooooo proud of my ds! (Sorry, but couldn't resist boasting.)

And this is great (though not actually an atlas) - someone gave it to my DD for Christmas when she was 5 - has stunning photos, plus bits about the people who live in the regions, and what life's like for the children there.

rabbitrabbit · 26/08/2006 10:58

wow redsky-think that deserves a boast

waterfalls · 26/08/2006 11:04

redsky
Fantastic to your ds.
my ds picks up things very quickly (as long as he is interested) he has autistic traits, and becomes obsessed with certain things, he knew the alphabet (upper and lower case) before he was 2 years old, plus numbers, shapes and colours, and he is frighteningly good on a computer, he has taught me a few things, some of the things he does on the pc totally astound me.

I'm convinced my ds was on the autism spectrum - but we didn't go through diagnosis because his problems were being so well addressed by his teachers. If that hadn't happened we would have needed the diagnosis to access the right help. I think we were very fortunate because ds has never been 'labelled' autistic.
By the way he has been visiting Prague this week with some friends - comes home today - and I can't wait!!!

M&S did a great My First Atlas last Christmas - I got it for my 5yo dd - she loves it - it's got pictures as well as maps etc.
