Washable nappies at night

To all of you real nappy users out there: do you use disposables at night, or cloth?

With dd1 we used cloth (bambino mio wraps with folded terry), and didn't seem to have too many leaks, but when she was little we always changed her at the last feed, around 11pm, so she only went 8-9 hours. Dd2 sleeps much better in the evenings than dd1 ever did, and I haven't wanted to change her in at 11 because I don't want to bring her into bright light. (Also because I have got lazier since dd1!)

When I tried leaving dd2 in a cloth nappy from bedtime (6-7 pm) until morning, we have got leaks. This time we are using motherease wraps with terry inside. Disposables last all night. Is this inevitable, or are there cloth nappies out there that can go for 12 hours? She is having 2 feeds in this period, so there is quite a lot to absorb!

I use cloths at night and find they leak less than disposables. But I use Totsbots with an extra booster - well, half a booster: I cut them because they were so big.

Could you try using a booster? A folded up muslin works as a booster when my "proper" ones don't dry in time! Or buy a couple of Tots Bots - they seem to leak less than flat nappies for me with or without the boosters.

Seconding SenoraPostrophe (one of my favourite mumsnet names btw ooh actually rolymoly's a great one too, now I sound very creepy but not meaning to be) We (well ds) use totsbots with motherease air flow wraps and get far less leaks than with disposables. I do use a booster (tots bots pad shaped one) inside the nappy and a muslim between nappy and wrap but then ds is 16 months and still has a feed when I come up to bed so he probably produces a lot of wee in 1 big go iyswim, and this might not be neccessary for your dd2. Even though his bum is massive in his night nappy he doesn't seem to care and with fleece boosters his bottom's pretty dry in the morning. Hth

Croak · 19/03/2004 16:49

Doh, mean fleece liners.

Demented · 20/03/2004 14:56

With DS2 we use either Minkis , or Bear Behind (both WAHM nappies). Both are stuffable nappies that are fully fleece inside to help keep baby dry. You fold a terry nappy and stuff it in the pocket but you can also add a booster etc, basically adjust the stuffing until you are happy. We use Tots & ME wraps during the day and occasionally use it at night as well, very absorbant, I just prefer DS2 to wear something fleece at night for dryness.

Why, thankyou, Croak!

SenoraPostrophe · 20/03/2004 15:19

demented - have you tried those Minki yoyos for potty training? Thinking of starting with dd soon...

Any hints? I'm using the motherease wrap (velcro) with motherease under (occasinally a tots bots or terry) but I have had lots of leaks recently. Big boy (9 weeks) but skinny legs like his dad. Problem is getting the wrap tight around the legs without cutting him in half. The popper wrap is too loose around the legs still so can't use it yet. Any good wraps for this 14lb future shot putter? The situation is better with the booster and fleecey liner as it adds bulk and makes the wrap tighter...but still need ideas.

I agree with SP and Croak, we used TotsBots at night as they are that bit thicker and Motherease wraps. We never had any leaks

bobsmum · 20/03/2004 18:52

Tattie - are your Totsbots nippa fastening or velcro? You can get a much snugger fit with nippas cos they pull in 3 directions rather than just the 2 vertically. You shouldn't need the wrap to fasten too tightly around your son's legs because the nappy should contain any mess - the wrap is there to be water resistant.

We use totsbots (nippa) with motherease wrap (poppers) and one booster. Ds (18mths) sleeps 13.5 hours in them and we've never had a leak.

I've found that Miranda on Twinkleontheweb.com is really great at solving nappy quandaries - there's a "nappy chat" section with a questions thread - she usually replies in couple of days. I'm sure she'd answer emails too.

SP haven't tried the training pants, DS2 is 21 months and isn't in the least bit interested in potty training just now but wouldn't mind hearing how you get on with them if you decide on them for your DD.

Thanks for the messages. No problems with leaks over the last few days. I have ordered a small popper motherease wrap to see if it helps, but I have also added the booster pad into the motherease which has helped alot. I've also ordered a pull on wrap to see too. I haven't had problems with leaks with the tots bots or terry but only have a couple of these...may buy more! I have had some great help from the nappy lady web site but the more hints the merrier!

Freddiecat · 23/03/2004 17:27

We use TotsBots 2 with large motherease wraps. At night put in a fleece lined booster. DS (23 mths) is in the night nappy from 7pm until anything up to 9am the following morning and we never get leaks.

bluebear · 23/03/2004 19:33

Also using totsbots with fleece lined pad shaped booster (and a tots PUL wrap). My dd is on feeding strike during the day, and is having all her feeds at night at the moment, but we still haven't leaked!

rolymoly · 24/03/2004 10:02

Thanks everyoneI've been using terry plus booster liner (fleece on skin-side, terry on the other) for a few nights now, with no leaks. I don't know why I didn't try this beforewe even had the boosters lying around from dd1. Dd2 is 15 weeks now so I can't really blame addled new-born brain anymore.
