My big black suitcase is ready for the bin......

I need to buy a big new suitcase for longhaul trips. Am unsure if it's best to buy expensive (thinking it will last longer), or cheap (baggage handlers are notoriously rough on cases so do I really want to let them maul something nice?). Also wonder if it's best to buy soft-sided or hard molded from a durability/weight standpoint. Finally - any suggestions about where to look/purchase would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi Earlybird - can't answer all your questions but thought I would give you quick heads-up - apparently BA are changing their weight allowance from October to 23kgs per suitcase depending on the class of travel and distance. so do bear in mind that those big framed suitcases can weigh anything up to 5kgs when they are empty - worth looking into, maybe?

Hi Coolmama - yes, the weight thing is an issue. That's why I hesitate to consider the hard molded cases. I had some frantic moments last summer repacking/redistributing weight curbside in America prior to each check in because they're so eager to charge for extra weight. Don't want to to do that every trip.

Anyone know if Selfridges still has a good department for travel goods?

they are selling some in Woolworths - "IT" suitcases - "International Travellers" (we bought ours off price-drop.tv) As they are hard mould ones and got a curve on the back of the suitcase so people dont kick the suitcase on back of their heel, extendable size too and excellent quality.. would recommend it to anyone

biglips · 22/08/2006 21:49

they sell them in big expensive shops in high school double the price..couldnt believe Woolworths were selling them too for half the price

I will probably switch my huge wheelie cases for the slightly smaller reinforced nylon hold-alls that have handles and wheels and just weigh everything before going to the airport like in the old days - have no desire to pay £120 in overweight!!

Any other suggestions for where to go/what to get?
