I have bought these for both DDs and just started to iron them on. I have followed the instructions and just ruined a shirt

Burned the fabric and the label is melted

eek - I knew there was a reason I just scribbled names in the clothing labels with an indelible biro - poor you.

yoyo · 19/08/2006 16:18

Which ones have you got - the stretchy plastic wons or the woven ones? I have had no success with the former but the others have been really good.

Gillian76 · 19/08/2006 16:19

Plastic

Had the sew on ones last year but now have 2 to do for and feeling a bit lazy!

She now only has one short sleeved shirt and 3 long sleeved. Think it's going to be too hot for long sleeves next week. Guess where I'm off to...

AND, they never gave me my Mumsnet discount!

Grrrrrrrr

Wons?? I meant "ones" of course (distracted by DDs putting on make up and DS attempting to wrap his willy in toilet paper - typical Saturday afternoon stuff).

yoyo · 19/08/2006 16:28

Ring them and tell them. You get through to the owner's home so don't be surprised if a child answers.

Gillian76 · 19/08/2006 16:42

Do you think they'll reimburse me for my shirt?

OP posts:
yoyo · 19/08/2006 21:32

Worth a try I'd have thought.

Gillian76 · 19/08/2006 22:02

I am still as I followed the instructions to the letter. Did you have the same trouble yoyo?

OP posts:
roisin · 19/08/2006 22:15

I've not had any problems with them Gillian76.
Your iron should be just on the blue protective paper thing, not on the shirt; so I'm not sure how you've managed to burn/melt the fabric

Gillian76 · 19/08/2006 22:52

Blue protective paper thing? [confused emoticon]

OP posts:
roisin · 20/08/2006 09:00

Mine came with a blue protective paper thing, that you put over the labels, and iron on to that. But maybe you've got a different kind?

Give them a ring and see what they say!

Furball · 20/08/2006 09:05

I too have a blue protective sheet to iron on. Maybe they forgot to pack one in your order, I'd give them a ring.

I now use laundry marker and can't be bothered to faff about labels!

Gillian76 · 21/08/2006 16:43

OK it seems the blue protective sheet is no longer necessary...

They are replacing the shirt though

OP posts:
yoyo · 21/08/2006 16:50

Mine came with the protective sheet too. I didn't have problems until I tumble-dried the clothes though and then the labels wrinkled and became "scratchy". I have posted about this before and noone else had this problem so I wouldn't worry that it will happen with yours.

Glad that they are replacing te shirt!

anniebear · 21/08/2006 21:25

I picked up a leaflet in Asda

They do the labels. I found they were the cheapest

I ironed them on with no problems

hulababy · 21/08/2006 21:28

I have the blue paper too.

You did definitely use the iron on labels didn't you, and not the plastic stick on labels (meant for shoes, bags, lunch boxes, etc.) - sure you did but just checking!

hulababy · 21/08/2006 21:29

I won some from this company well over a year ago now. Have had them in DD's nursery clothes and been fine in all that time.

tassis · 21/08/2006 21:30

oh rubbish, i've ordered this kind too

what did they say when you phoned Gillian?

have you successfully done anymore?

great that they're reimbursing the shirt...

Gillian76 · 21/08/2006 21:47

They are plastic, but not the kind you stick on books and lunchboxes, etc

They are designed to be ironed on. No protective sheet and the lady I spoke to today said they were designed to be set at higher temperatures than a household iron could generate (ie. a heating iron for industrial use)

I did some other ones more succesfully using a teatowel on top.

Thinking about it though... The shirt can't be ironed at the temperature the instructions suggested to hardly a surprise that it burned

OP posts:
tassis · 21/08/2006 21:52

so Gillian, can you talk me through what i should do re iron temps etc...

Gillian76 · 21/08/2006 22:03

OK, the instructions say have iron on cotton or hotter. Clothes should be washed prior to applying labels. Place label on clothing and iron directly over, counting slowly to 14. You should keep the iron still throughout (apparently this is very important as when the glue melts, if you move the iron as you would when ironing normally, it makes a huge mess)

I did all of this and ruined the shirt.

So for the rest, I had the iron at cotton but put a tea towel over the label and the iron on top of that. I also found that on synthetic fabrics, eg. lining of DDs pinafores, 2 shorter burts of 6 or so seconds seemed better. Time will tell though, as if the glue's not set properly, the labels will fall off when wshed and tumbled.

Oh joy!

thanks!

let's hope they work!
