Kitchen Sinks - pros and cons of different types

CountessDracula · 16/03/2004 16:33

OK so I'm boring! BUT am about to have a new kitchen and want to know what you all think so don't make huge mistake

Two options we are considering

this one or something like this

Have heard that the ceramic belfasty type sinks are a mare to keep clean and everything breaks on them - is this true? Also are these undermounted things ok, do they just get very caked with scale at the joins etc? Any other ideas welcome - bear in mind that the sink will be on it's own in a unit with the dishwasher/drainer to the left and nothing (well entrance to larder actually) on the right.

CD - it is the 'Devonshire' but not with dardk wood worksurfaces as shown on the MFI site - we would choose beech

Grommit · 17/03/2004 14:45

how bad was that link - sorry - can't do links - go to mfi.co.uk and look at kitchens - traditional

CountessDracula · 17/03/2004 14:53

very nice indeed Grommit. Is it painted or lacquered? Love the dark worktop myself - what are you going for?

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 17/03/2004 14:53

(and is it expensive?)

OP posts:
Grommit · 17/03/2004 14:58

It is coated wood - very nice clean lines. I have a kitchen/diner and my table and chairs are beech so the dark wood wouldn't go. For a U shaped kitchen and an additional dresser (for the diner area) it is about £7500 inc fitting. Do you think this is expensive?

CountessDracula · 17/03/2004 14:59

No not at all! I had some quotes much higher than that. Suspect mine will end up about that much

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 17/03/2004 15:28

Hey grommit I just called my kitchen co and said that we had done our sums and that the price they were quoting was going to be too much. Said that we would need 15% off if we were to go with it (having already beaten them down)

They said yes!!! Try it!

I'm getting a new kitchen too. Will probably go for Franke 1 & 1/2 ss inset sink, black granite worktops. Slightly creamy kitchen units. Getting made by joiner friend. Cost of granite & units, exc appliances is £9000, but is quite a large L-shape area and it's going to be framed units (doors inset into frame so hinges show). Quite traditional but no 'twiddly' bits. House wouldn't suit too modern.
Have spent 15 months planning this and should finally have room finished in about 8 weeks. Hope it all turns out as planned!
Any suggestions on how to fit in a large & small sink whilst only taking up 60cm unit would be welcome.

berries · 17/03/2004 17:24

PS loved the ss butlers sink but would worry about it looking smudgy (& I'm not houseproud). If you wiped the front with baby oil wouldn't it just transfer itself to your trousers everytime you leaned against it?
Also, friend has just had black granite worktops but said she wishes she hadn't had plain black as shows every mark (& crumb).

CountessDracula · 17/03/2004 17:29

Yes Berries I know how!

Smeg inset sinks make a UM45, a 30 and a 15 I believe so you could have a 45 and a 15. Or just make your cabinet a bit wider if you're having it handmade and compensate elsewhere. We're having the sink in a 750mm double cupboard. Ours is being handmade and have not yet ordered so we keep jigging it about!

Anyone know offhand where I can get a double american fridge with ice and water dispenser that is only 800mm or less wide?

Or a single but large fridge freezer that has ice and water disp (actually just ice would do)

CountessDracula · 17/03/2004 17:32

Berries the link to the smeg sinks is here

Crunchie · 17/03/2004 17:43

I have found an admiral one that is 807mm but I don't think it has a water/ice thingy. Or an LG one which is 890mm. I'll keep trying

CountessDracula · 17/03/2004 17:44

Thank you!

have started fridge freezer thread now!

Grommit · 17/03/2004 17:51

CD - thanks for the tip - will try to beat them down!! Just need to make sure dh's contract is renewed before booking anything. Good luck with the fridgefrezer

Crunchie · 17/03/2004 17:51

Sorry can only find 680 as a minimum and then it isn't plumbed in. Can you not find the extra 10cm if you are having the kitchen built to order?

Crunchie · 17/03/2004 17:52

860! not 680!

CountessDracula · 17/03/2004 17:54

Oh yes, I can fit a 900cm but I think it would look better with a slightly narrower one.

berries · 18/03/2004 09:27

Thanks cd, will look at that & see about pinching a bit from somewhere else. Like the look of that arrangement better than the Franke one.

Janh · 18/03/2004 09:47

I want a nice new kitchen!

Mine's only about 5 years old and I was thrilled with it when it was new but it's boring now. Is this normal?

CountessDracula · 18/03/2004 09:48

I should think so! Did you get one that was very fashionable at the time and now looks dated? Or are you just bored of it?

OP posts:
Crunchie · 18/03/2004 09:58

CD I think you might have to use the extra space There is a couple of places to try though, who maybe able to advise - try www.trade-appliances.co.uk or www.kitchen-appliance.co.uk or www.appliance-world.co.uk You can usually get good prices from these people and as they specialise in top brands they will know more than me

CountessDracula · 18/03/2004 10:00

Crunchie, the Admiral one does have water disp but is tiny! Don't think I'd fit half of my stuff in

Am now looking for more trad fridge but with ice dispenser

OP posts:
Janh · 18/03/2004 10:01

No, not fashionable, just nice solid pine with square panels - 3 on a 60cm door, 2 on a 40 or 50 - sturdy, traditional, dateless etc.

Now it's just dull!

Grommit · 18/03/2004 10:05

JanH - you could paint the cupboards ..? My mum painted hers cream and put in granite worksurfaces and it looks fab
