Has anyone made their own wrap?

I've been looking at the didymos site and other similar wraps and tbh £65 for a strip of cloth seems a bit steep. Has anyone ever made their own - I've worked out I can make one in linen in a fabric I love for about £15-20. Anyone see any problems doing this?

I know a girl who makes her own baby slings - she is so cool- I wish I could make them. She 's even made own to match her own outfit. It was a very simple design, a piece of square material with four ties at each corner, so you can carry the baby on your front or back. I'm sure there are websites offering designs and advice.

www.bigmamaslings.co.uk has a page for advice for making your own slings.

Thank you - I'll have a look at that one!

The main thing you need to be aware of is the type of material you use, it needs to be strong enough so as not to sag and stretchy enough so can fit the baby snugly

Had a look at the site now and very good link - thanks. I think the fabric I've found will be just right - off to tell DH I can save £50 and go spend it on some more lovely baby stuff!

Good luck, and enjoy carrying your baby! You can even buy papoose coats - a coat for you to go over you with a hole for your baby's head when you're carrying your baby on your back. That sounds like a great idea to me, especially in the winter.

Yes, I've made my own wrap out of a piece of linen, and there have been no problems. I bought 2.5m and cut it in half lengthwise, sewed the ends together with a flat-felled seam and hemmed it all around (by hand!). I've used this constantly for 9 months now and it's worth its weight in gold. It spreads the weight so well that I can carry my 21 lb baby around for three or four hours at a time without really noticing it.

It's good to know I'm not the only one penny pinching! How did you find learning how to tie it/put baby in - I had a baby bjorn last time and hated it, I couldn't lift DS high enough to get his legs in so stopped using it around weeks - it wasn't very comfy either.

wow - missed the 'by hand' bit, at least I have a machine!
