Cot mattresses - do you but another for baby no. 2???

I can't remember where I read it, but I've heard that you should buy another cot mattress for each baby you have - seems a bit expensive to me. Has anyone else done this or is this shop hype?!

Well I'm not going to! I mean - come on....

musica · 14/03/2004 21:46

Think it's ok if in the same family, and if the mattress isn't saggy.

GeorginaA · 14/03/2004 21:47

Well we're about to. I'm pretty sure it used to be the advice to avoid cot death (new mattress for each child), but then someone mentioned on another thread that the advice had changed now and it wasn't deemed necessary - just a good clean/airing was fine.

I just felt happier getting a new one, and the small amount of money was worth it for the piece of mind it would give me.

WideWebWitch · 14/03/2004 21:49

tbh I would buy a new one. What do the FSID say? Shall I see if I can find out? I think it's because no-one knows what causes cot death hence the recommendation to buy new for each child.

hth

miranda2 · 14/03/2004 22:04

hooray, my stinginess is officially Ok!
I bought a good sprung mattress on the basis that it would then last for two children, so the thought of chucking it out and replacing it for some new theory that will change in five minutes really rankles!

coppertop · 14/03/2004 22:15

We used the same one for ds1 and ds2. Ds1 hardly ever slept anyway so the mattress didn't get much use the first time round.

tillymint · 15/03/2004 21:24

I changed cot matresses between dd1 and dd2, but they are 5 years apart.
New baby due in Sept will have dd2s mattress, since only 1 year apart.
I would say it depends where you've stored it, and how much abuse it took.

suzywong · 15/03/2004 21:27

no, we didn't

SoupDragon · 15/03/2004 21:28

DS1 and 2 are 2 years apart and it never crossed my mind to buy a new one. It was never out of use!

stupidgirl · 15/03/2004 22:03

Like Soupy, mine had about 4 or 5 months break between children, as I put ds into a bed when pg with dd. I bought a good quality sprung mattress, as I was paranoid, so I didn't even consider changing it between children.

Then again, I don't think dd ever slept in it for more than a couple of hours at a time. I finally disassembled it when she was about 18 months old and it had been stood redundant for about 16 of those months....

aloha · 15/03/2004 22:10

No, that advice is out of date now. There are no risks to keeping the same one.

handlemecarefully · 16/03/2004 08:46

I've always been over cautious - so yes I have

smellymelly · 16/03/2004 17:19

HV said mattresses in the same arefamily ok. I let DD have DS's mattress, but he'd only used it for about 1 year max, and then it aired for about 1 year.

would buy new one for no.3 though as i think that would be enough use.....

Is £50 really comparible to a childs life if there is any chance of it causing cot death???

Lil · 16/03/2004 17:34

£50 is a lot of money to fork out for a lot of nonsense that's for sure! Do believe everything you read??

I am sure this is another one of those urban myths!! You hear it again and again, but it actually makes no sense when you think about it, and it just plays on parents fears. It's a bit like the old fear about catching something off a toilet seat, I mean..what germs do you think could really survive on an inert toilet seat/ matress that could then come to life and suddenly infect you...answers on a postcard please

smellymelly · 16/03/2004 18:05

Lil....

No, I do not believe everything I read, I'm perfectly capable of making up my own mind on what to buy!!!!! But surely I'm not the only one to do whatever it takes to look after my kids???

I remember spending the 1st 6 months with both my kids checking they were still breathing while they were asleep, I can't imagine me risking their lives or health because I was not following advice given by reputable bodies.

bundle · 16/03/2004 18:09

we have had cotbeds so had to get one for each, but as our only storage space is in our damp cellar, I probably would have splurged on a new one. indeed, I did with the moses basket.

Angeliz · 16/03/2004 18:31

Noodleboo, i've not thought that much about the cot matress but it's stored under dd's bed so i guess i assumed we'd use that one!
I'll have to decide when we have abother!
I am planning to buy a new moses basket matress though as it's been used for my sister's boy and now my freinds and i wouldn't like a new baby to be the fourth!
I guess once you hear it it sticks
