Backwards facing car seat for a big baby

DS2's head is at the top of his carry car seat. We have a britax first class that we used for DD2 but it doesn't fit either of our cars rearward facing so what other options do we have?

The chicco shuttle is one that can be used rearward and forward facing, it is suitable from birth to about 18kg.
It isn't as good as the britax one as I find that rearward facing it is not as sturdy as the first class. Forward facing it is fine, but you still need rearward facing.
There is also a mothercare alternative which I am afraid I do not know about and a new one which I have yet to test out for myself as they have not given us a test model.
I know you can get the chicco one from Babies R Us.
Hope that helps

hi xena,
just wondered why you cant fit britax in your car. is it the space or the seatbelt. if your seatbelt is short you can get longer one fitted. we have britax 1st class since dd was 3m(rear). i think its the best of combination carseat.
hth,

The trouble is that in my car DS1 sits in the front and DD1&2 in the back so it needs to fit in with thier 2 car seats and for some reason in DHs (which is a 7 seater) it just slips, not secure at all.

I have thought about getting the airbag disabled in the front so that one of the bigger car seats could go in the front but it doesn't really solve things in DH's car (and we need to use that when we are all out together as mine is only a 7 seater)

you should consider that as a last resort to disable airbag. mainly because it is safer in the back for them anyway and then it would be disabled if an adult was in the front.
What weight is your ds? and have you got anyone to check the first class even at mc or bru?
It is a shame as that one normally fits very nicely.

We bought it at halfords so took it back to them. It used to be rock solid in the galaxy we had.

I think though that we will have to disable the air bag when he needs a forward facing car seat as it just won't fit in the back with the DD's car seats, its a squash with the carry seat.
TBH I don't like DS1 sitting in front of an airbag although he is tall he sits on a booster as I worried aboutit

oh dear i wish i had something else to suggest but im afraid i am out!

Xena · 14/08/2006 21:57

I know, we seriously have no money to buy a new car atm.
I recal when DS1 was a baby that there was a car seat that wasn't suitable from birth but could rear or forward face that had adjustable sides, I think it was made by bebe confort or something similar I've tried googling but I can't find it

Iseos safe side carseat?
That one was suitable from 6 months to about 18kg again. and it had the adjustable side impact protectors.. im not sure that one is around anymore unfortunately.
I know the new Iseos is only a forward facing seat.

Xena · 14/08/2006 22:17

That sounds the one. I wonder when it was discontinued? Maybe Someone has one lurking in a stock room somewhere?

i have no idea i havent seen it in a long while i think its been out of action for over a year or two!
in fact i dont know why i remebered it!

Olihan · 14/08/2006 22:45

This might be totally irrelevant but I had the same problem with my ds in a mamas and papas carry car seat and we actually ended up buying a Britax Babysafe. It's still a carryseat but it's a different shape to the M&P one so he sat lower in it IYSWIM. He was in it until he was about 11 months I think.
