Things to do with small children near York or Hull

We have a week booked in a cottage pretty much half way between York and Hull. The week is in June so our children will be 10 months and 3.2.

DS loves wheels and trains in particular so we'll be going to the National Railway Museum. We like outdoor stuff. We'll also be looking for a good swimming pool in the area.

Where do you recommend we visit? Thanks in advance for your help!

Another one for The Deep, it is the best aquarium I've ever been to. Can't wait to see the penguins. My parents live in Hull. My dcs love going to The Deep, East Park, The Humber Bridge Country Park and doing the Fish Trail when they go visit. The fish trail takes you all around the old town following various fish in the walls and pavement, small ones love spotting them.

I grew up going to Castle Howard a lot, I always loved the grounds but I've not been i n years. Since you have membership though you don't lose anything by going.

The NYM railway is fab and there are plenty of nice easy walks near the stations so you can hop on and off and explore.

And yet another vote for The Deep. It is the best aquarium I have ever visited.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is brilliant, but don't go on a cloudy day.The moors are quite high up and the cloud cover comes down very low. The views from the train are beautiful and you need a clear day to make the most of it. Pickering has a ruined castle and is a charming little town worth visiting.

Beningborough Hall (NT property just outside York) is a good day out.

Agreeing that the Deep is fantastic - DS1 has been a few times and loves it there.

And we all went to East Park when we visited my family, the other week. It's been re-vamped a lot, in recent years and has a massive walk-through bird enclosure, which the kids loved. There's a couple of talking parrots, there, too. And the famous wallabies!

If you like theme parks and fancy a short-ish drive North, then there's Flamingoland and Lightwater valley. Flamingoland is slightly harder to get to, but has a lot more for smaller children, as it has a zoo. And pink flamingos, of course!

Simply walking around the city walls in York is nice. My DS used to love running ahead to the next parapet, hiding & leaping out to attack his "unsuspecting" father! There are some sections where it's not enclosed on one side so you need to hold hands.

Flamingoland is good for littlies. My DD loves it.

We took dd to a giant softplay in york. Huge. Had a trike track outside, and outdoor play park (inc sandpit) and a petting zoo. Think it was called Creepie Crawlies.

Creepy Crawlies in York has a brilliant reputation, and also in York the National Railway Museum for their ages. Make sure you go to Betty's for tea and cake too

There's also a good playground at the York designer outlet if you fancy some shopping.

There's also Sewerby near bridlington. Has a small zoo, a hall you can look round and lovely grounds. There's also a cliff top land train that takes you into bridlington.
