Clothes suitable for own wedding party

My new SIL has asked me to accompany her on a shopping trip to choose something to wear to her own wedding party. The wedding itself took place a couple of months ago, but they are now having a fairly formal wedding party for friends and family in this country. I'm not sure that I'm best qualified to advise her really, my wardrobe barely extends past school run gear! Any ideas gratefully received.

Hmmm. I'd say it depends on what sort of party she is having - day time/evening, black tie etc and what type of venue it is being held at. More information please!

Coddy · 12/03/2004 12:33

and her age and shape and time of year and finances

CountessDracula · 12/03/2004 12:37

Sorry are you choosing something for her or for you? What do you mean by party, is it the reception straight after wedding/

Can you go to a department store with a personal Shopper service, like Debenhams. Even if you don't buy there in the end it might give you some ideas.

Really depends on her age/style/type of "do"/time of year etc

Good idea about the personal shopper-I'll see if that can be arranged at relatively short notice ( we're shopping on Thursday next week). My SIL is 33, about a size 12/14, and the do is early April. They have planned a sit down meal for the afternoon, followed by a buffet, bar and disco for the evening- all held in the same hotel. As for finances, I get the impression my brother is paying, as he has joked that she isn't to spend too much ( so lets go wild with the credit card!!!) Does that help?

I would have thought a soft dress like a bias cut, worn with jacket/stole for more formal afternoon session - sort of Laura Ashley/Monsoon style iykwim - but whether that would suit her personality have no idea !

josiejump · 15/03/2004 14:01

Thanks LIZS,I haven't really known her very long and have generally only seen her in casual clothes, although in her wedding photos she looked really glamorous, with hair extensions and various dresses ( I think she changed at least 5 times for the photos! ). I think we'll make Monsoon our first port of call ( not sure if we have a Laura Ashley here)

Coast do a great range of wedding appropriate clothes, they have a few stores around, but also have lots of concessions in department stores.

Jigsaw has some interesting things

Beccarollover · 16/03/2004 14:52

Coast and Karen Millen I would go to - also personal shopper in large department store might be handy

josiejump · 20/03/2004 12:31

Well, we started off in Monsoon, then on to Coast. She tried on lots of dresses there, and they were really nice, however they cost more than she wanted to pay. In the end, we found a fab dress in TK Maxx, and a pair of shoes too, so she's sorted now. Just have to kit out myself and all the children now!
