Ergo New Generation Baby Carrier

I have been searching for a new sling for a while.
I've considered a ring sling but i'm not really sure I don't want anything fiddly.
After carrying DS2 for the day in our faded old baby bjorn my shoulders are killing me (I was pushing the double pushchair as well) I need to buy a new sling
I'd quite like to carry DS2 on my back when he is 6mths (he is 4mths atm)
Can't decided whether to buy the ergo or to hang out a couple of months and buy a proper back pack carrier??
If I buy it now do I need the newborn insert until he is 6mths?

You can find a comparison of new gen vs original here

It depends how good DS's head control is, but I'd say you probably won't need the newborn insert? I've never used an Ergo for a baby that young, so may not be offering the best advice. I'd email Philippa at Little Possums (link above), she's v v helpful.

We have a backpack carrier and an Ergo, and I find the Ergo INFINITELY more comfortable. DD is 2yrs and weighs around 29lbs, she feels v heavy in the backpack but almost weightless in the Ergo, plus it packs much smaller and you can use it around shops etc.

Thanks thats really helpfull. I have seen a website that does try before you buy so was considering doing that.
DO you have the orig or new gen?

you can wear the Ergo on your front now without the new born insert if your ds can hold his head properly. I used mine with dd from 4 months this way. she is now 15 months and 22 lbs and I can still walk around the shops with her for 2 hrs with her on my front. She is more grabby if she's on my back. I wouldn't buy a big backpack later on. an ergo will take a 3 yr old. My dh hiked 16 miles with dd in the ergo for half the time.

i have the original. my friend who recommended it prefers the original as the new generation has padding which makes it hotter in the summer 'down south'. the original is canvas only, makes it easier to carry too as i did today in my main rucksack through the chaos that was the airports.

Just what I like to hear the cheaper one is better

We have new gen just because I managed to get one 2nd hand. Have heard plenty of reviews that original is just as good if not better.

bigmamaslings.co.uk do 2wk hire for £10 plus £50 deposit - very good service!

I could really do with seeing both of these, does anyone know of a shop that sells them?

just go for the cheaper one! you can always sell it again on ebay. honestly. stop dithering. and let me know when you have tried it out. i can post you a fab pic on member's profiles of my dd in mine.

Bit the bullet and ordered the cheaper one. The classic that i'm watching on ebay was over £20 plus p&p so I though that for 39.99 might as well get the new one

ooooohhhh! keen to hear how you get on with the ergo.

kiskidee · 16/08/2006 10:47

my mate sent me this link today: have a look
ergo

Xena · 17/08/2006 10:44

My one arrived today and its lovely, the only thing is that it doesn't have any instructions and i'm not sure if I'm wearing it right.

wear the padded belt on the hip, hiking rucksack style. if you feel any pull on you back, its not low enough on the hips. also straps must be pulled close enough so baby is snug against your body, if you feel pull on your shoulders, baby isnt close enough. legs can be spread open piggy back style or tucked in froggy style for smaller babies. look at the last link i posted it looks fab. will post a pick of my dd in members profiles.

Great link for instructions here

Thanks Guys. Love the sling already didn't have a chance to go out with it today but DD2 loved it as much as DS2
