Iron on labels for school - do they work?

So I guess the title says it all. I need to order some soon for September and hate sewing them in, DD2 is starting too, so even more to do. Any recommendations?

Ds1 started in reception last year and I bought really nice iron tags with a little dinosaur on. Tbh, I gave up and just write in biro on the label - just as effective and much easier!

I won some iron on tags from easy2label via MN. I have used them on DD's clothes for nursery and a year later they are still there and fine. I have got more iron ones for DD's uniform - she starts September too.

I have just ordered from Easy2Name. Glad to know they're good quality!

hulababy · 06/08/2006 10:06

That's it - easy2name, not easy2label!

I got some for DS1 when he started school, & much as they ironed on fine, after a few washes the pen fades & you cannot read their name. It may be easier to just write their name on the label, as Gobbledigook suggested.

MaryP0p1 · 06/08/2006 10:22

Never did for me. I used to write the name over the washing instructions in black felt pen.

jambuttie · 06/08/2006 10:23

I got some from nametagit .co.uk as ds1 starts school in 2 weeks

they ahve been ironed on and are securely in place -so far

glassofwine · 06/08/2006 11:55

Thanks, will try Easy2name. DD1 got upset when I just wrote on as all her friends had labels - I'm afriad I'm a sucker for that.

Really?! Wow!

I wanted to do it all nice and properly at first but then they grow out of stuff during the year and you can't be arsed to do it all again. I certainly won't be standing ironing on tags for 3 lots of school uniform! Biro works just fine and does the job.

we had some lovely ones when we were little, with our names embroidered on them. i don't know if you can still get them, would be interested to find out!

I started with iron on but did resort to permanent marker pen on labels. Iron on was fine for shirt collars but found them no so good for anything near elastic waistband/pants etc as the constant creasing made them peel off or wear/crack with time.
I used to label all pants etc but soon realised that pants only ever come off on swim days which is set in stone so could get away with only labelling a couple of pairs and not bothering with other pants. Same with vests - stay on for PE only come off with swimming so not worth labelling every one.
Socks are a pain as mine found the labels itchy and nowhere really suitable. In the end I kept a "back up" pair in her PE bag and bought loads of plain white ankle socks that were cheap enough not to worry if she lost one. She never lost a single sock as they are taught to take them off and stuff into shoes immediately.
The big things to label are coats, jumpers, PE tops and shorts and shoes as these are taken off a lot and most commonly lost. With shoes, I found the most successful labelling place to be under the T bar strap or shoe tongue - less rubbing I guess. Tried the sole and the side of the inner and rubbed off. Marker pen also comes off in shoes.

GLTC do a stamper thing for naming but it is expensive. Theoretically with three it'd be worth it, but no., too much

hockeymum · 06/08/2006 16:52

GOt my dd iron on labels and stick on ones for lunchbox, bag etc from stuckonyou.biz

Mainly because I'm a sucker for cute stuff and I could choose between 30 different pictures and loads of colours and I thought she'd like pink fairy ones!

Yes, I know I could have written it on but I'm really enjoying looking at how cute they are!

SlightlyFamiliarPeachyClair · 06/08/2006 16:58
