We have Kahrs London in our living room. It's the one strip plank and looks gorgeous in my opinion. I think it was £38 a square metre including fitting.

I can recommend really great floor layers/finishers. I got my flooring at LASSCO's (www.lassco.co.uk). They have a good selection and reasonable prices.

I bought the flooring from an ad in the back of an interiors magazine, bought the cheapest grade possible (was very reasonable) and our builder, already on site, layed it. Looks fab and his lasted well for 5yrs, in conservatory that gets cold at night in winter and very hot in summer so good test! will try and find supplier

We have oak thro the whole upstairs, works out cheaper than carpets if you have no floor boards to begin with! £25 - £35 per yd sqr. Dont varnish but apply Danish oil once every 2-3 yrs, every year in hi traffic areas and bath rm. Looks fantastic and improves with sick/wee/poo!

Is it suitable for kitchens?

We had solid oak floor board put down throughout our downstairs. Where we have original floor boards we just had this stuff put on top. I think it was £27 p sq m (50mm thick), from the London wood floor company in Wandsworth London. We then separately got a fitter who charged £10-15 p sq m depending on whether we needed steps etc. The place you buy the wood from will be able to recommend local fitters.

NB The wood needs to be in your house to acclimatise (?) for about 2 weeks before it can be fitted.

We've also got Oak Floor in certain areas of the house (both upstairs and downstairs). Live in old cottage therefore bought reclaimed Oak wide boards from a salvage yard an on-site buildre fitted - like someone else said it improves with sick, wee, poo etc!!!!
Cannot remember exatc cost but worked out cheaper than the carpet we also had fitted at the same time!!

A mate of mine who runs a wood flooring co (I know what a git I had forgotten) has said he has some 200 year old wide oak boards, french, which are £120 per sq m if you buy retail, he will let me have them cost at £40 per sq m. Is is mad having 200 year old boards in a 100 year old house?!
