Thuka or Flexa??????

Hello
I'm trying to decide between a Flexa and Thuka mid-sleeper bed. Thuka is cheaper but we've seen Flexa in a store and are very taken with it. Has anyone else tried to compare the two - and if so what do you think?

Thanks

sorry - haven't seen Thuka, but all my three children have Flexa beds and they're lovely, so solid and well-made and of course very adaptable.

www.roomtogrow.co.uk often have very good special offers for Flexa if you're not in a rush (delivery time is 5 weeks or so).

Misspiggy · 02/08/2006 14:58

Same here - I haven't heard of Thuka but DSs have Flexa beds and they are still in mint condition after years of use and abuse! Having spent a few nights on the bottom bunk of DS2's bed ( he used to have terrible nightmares) I can also vouch for how comfy the Flexa mattresses are as well. HTH

calicopie · 02/08/2006 15:03

I've got Thuka (bought it from room to grow too!) and it's fab.

Honeymum · 02/08/2006 16:10

Thanks for all the advice - there are some good deals on roomtogrow but not quite what I want in terms of finish (I want white). I was thinking of ordering from Bunkybusiness.co.uk......

if you give room to grow a ring they'll probably give you the sale discount on the items you want. They've done this for me before, and are extremely helpful over the phone.

Honeymum · 07/08/2006 10:11

I've found out that Bedzrus in Bradford stock Thuka and are not only the cheapest but will deliver in 4-5 working days (Geekgrrl - we can't wait for roomtogrow as they take up to 8 weeks I think!). They also are also the clearance stockist for thuka (www.thuka.co.uk if anyone is interested!).

Thanks for all of your help

Misspiggy & geekgrrl - do you have the clear or white Flexa beds? I quite like the idea of the white ones but can't find anywhere to view them other than catalogue? I know they're solid, adaptable, well-made etc, but do they look ??!! Just a little worried as they're not as as some beds (for DD) but infinitely more practical.

Guess I can girlify them with the ubiquitous pink flowery bedding etc...

TIA

LIZS · 09/08/2006 15:47

dd has the white one . It isn't a solid colour so you can still see the grain and it has a slightly pinkis tinge when dressed in girly colours or pink decorated room. ds has the regular pine one.

geekgrrl · 09/08/2006 15:53

mine have all got the white ones, it's a lovely finish. As LIZS describes it's slightly translucent, but very durable and a proper, shiny varnish.
The pink accessories are very nice, too.

amazonianwoman · 09/08/2006 23:37

Thanks both Which pink accessories do you have?! Do DDs like the furniture? At what age do they hanker after the mid height setting with den etc underneath?

amazonianwoman · 10/08/2006 00:47

Promise not to ask any more Qs (well, maybe!)

And this is probably a really silly one...

Do you think the flexa white bed etc would co-ordinate OK with this range ? DD already has the wardrobe and chest of drawers, they're whitewashed Scandinavian pine, you can see the grain/wood. Ridiculous request I know, but I won't get to see the flexa stuff

Thanks!

I think it would go fine with that range.

We have the pink curtains and canopy and the pink tower - none of those are in use now anymore. dd1 started off at 2.5 yrs with the mid-height sleeper with slide and tower. She hasn't really used the slide for a few years now and as she is just moving into a new room we've decided to take the legs off, which is what she's been asking for lately.

She never played underneath the bed btw - bit annoying really considering the cost of those curtains!

I've also got mid-sleeper legs for ds's bed which I haven't put on yet, and a little shop window component, so I'm hopeful that he'll actually make use of that space.

LIZS · 10/08/2006 10:28

We've just got the book/magazine holder which buttons on the side rail - very useful. She has bookshelves from another range which coordinate well too. We also have the mid height legs and sloping ladder but her room isn't big enough to accommodate it here so will do it when we move. ds has had his mid height since he was almost 5. Good quality, his ahs mvoed house 3 times and dd's once.

geekgrrl · 10/08/2006 12:41

forgot to mention w. regards to slide use - dd is 7.
We've also moved the beds lots of times and they still look great. Dd's is 5 yrs old now and has been taken apart and moved 4 times, still looks like new (apart from some stickers and scribbles [rolls eyes])

amazonianwoman · 10/08/2006 13:06

Excellent, thanks all again, I really appreciate your advice

I knew I'd have a couple more Qs - sorry!

What side rail set-up would you recommend with the initial bed purchase? DD will be about 2.5 when she hopefully starts using it, she's only ever slept in a cot and she's not the best climber/descender in the world!

AND! did you buy flexa mattresses, if so, which ones? She's used to a good quality firm sprung cot mattress.

Finally (for now) - Lizs - mind if I ask which other range bookshelves you bought?

I'm really hoping DD will eventually like the den underneath the mid-sleeper. My greatest desire in life as a child was to have bunkbeds and/or a den, but I was stuck with my grandmother's hand-me-down huge double mahogany bed which I detested (would love it now LOL)

Thanks again, Mumsnet is ace

geekgrrl · 10/08/2006 14:11

dd has the pink flexa mattress (pocket sprung I think) and it's very nice. The other two children have cheaper sprung mattresses simply because we still had a couple hanging about in the garage.

Re. side rails - it depends on your room size/shape as it obviously makes a lot of difference once you put the platform & slide on.

We've got the end opening one and the side of centre opening bed rails, both are fine. Maybe she'd be better off with the side of centre opening one as there'll be less temptation/inclination to climb over the side IYKWIM.

LIZS · 10/08/2006 21:28

Ours have full length rail and a 3/4 with end opening (although in dd's current room a middle opening would have been better and make it easier to raise it with room for the steps). dd's bookcase was bought abroad so can't tell you if available in UK, sorry. ds has the Flexa mattress and dd a cheaper one. The Flexa one is a very tight fit so changing the sheet is awkward and catches the fingers !

amazonianwoman · 31/08/2006 14:40

Just thinking about ordering from Flexa whilst they have a 20% discount and have thought of one more question!

With the side rails (eg the end opening or side of centre ones you use when adding ladders/slide etc) are they attached by screwing through the main frame? So if they are removed at a later date, are you left with holes in the main bed frame??!

TIA x

LIZS · 31/08/2006 14:46

The rails slot onto the side bar and into predrilled holes in the corner support at the head end. They supply short colour matched dowels to plug any of the holes you don't use. You can screw it onto the frame for more strength but we've never felt the need.

amazonianwoman · 31/08/2006 15:04

Thanks for your prompt reply Lizs Now I have no excuse not to order!

amazonianwoman · 04/09/2006 19:23

Have ordered a white Flexa bed with side rails and a Flexa mattress today, 20% discount from Flexa direct

They should arrive in a couple of weeks. DD and I are v excited

Thanks again for your help!

Honeymum · 09/09/2006 21:11

Isn't my thread busy all of a sudden!!
Just to let you know we now have a thuka mid-sleeper in white which is lovely. Cost £315 with mattress delivered. Having seen Flexa in a local store I can't see that there's any difference. Anyone know if the Flexa bits and bobs fit Thuka?
Ta
