Do I need a double buggy?

DD1 will be 2 years and 3 months when baby due. Can I get away without a double buggy - just using a buggy board/or sling (for baby, obviously).
DH said "We can't get another buggy" (we're on buggy # 3 for dd1) when I brought up the subject.

I do walk a fair bit...

IME it depends on how well DD1 walks. My DS1 was 18 months when DS2 came along so we needed the double buggy. He's 2 now but I still use the double when I want him to go to sleep on long walks. I have a hand-me-down buggy board too but I've only been using it on short journeys (which mean he rides instead of walking anyway!)
I reckon if you're comfortable with the sling, you could use that until baby gets too big then s/he can go in the pushchair while DD1 walks - she'll be older by then anyway! (and maybe get a buggy board if you want to get a bad back from leaning at an odd angle and sore ankles from kicking the damn thing....)

Dinny, if you live anywhere near to me you can have mine. HArdly used - no charge. We had children of a similar age and hardly used it. Elder dd never took to buggy boards so was used by h with dog walking for about two months. She then HAD to walk - I hate doubel buggies. We're in Surrey - seriously it's yours or it's off to a charity shop.

i've been thinking about that too. i'm not expecting (not yet anyway) but dd2 is only 18months atm. if i have a baby in the next year i dont want to be buying another double, i hated the one i had with dd1+2 as it was heavey and awkward to store and i only used it for about 6months. I have been looking at buggies which detachable toddler seats and was wondering if they are any good.

Misdee, I saw a woman with one of those and asked her about it - she said it was really good but a bit pricey (i.e. about £500!!!)

misdee · 06/03/2004 22:13

i've been looking on kiddicare.com and they have one (zooper combi) under their tandems section which is about £170 i think. if i fall pregnant in the next 3months and need one i will sell my three wheeler (which i love) to get one of these.

Dinny, yes you could however, they are very handy...have 18 months between ds and dd and tbh when dd came along ds still needed to be pushed around as at that age their legs do get tired quite easily....

I saw an advert in local Co-op for a tandem pushchair (that's the long one, not the side by side one as arkward getting through doors and stuff)...in 1997 it was £40...it was pretty basic, no bags, cushioned seats etc...but it was VERY useful and with blankets etc it was really cosey for them both....

My advice would be although yes you could get away without it and use a sling...if you can find a cheap one (local newspapers, shop notices, friends and rels)ie. not £500 then your children can travel anywhere without getting too tired...AND if you have been for a walk into town and they both fall asleep you can leave them in the pushchair, in the house while you have a bit of time to yourself...Hope this helps a liitle

how about this ?

dinny · 07/03/2004 11:00

Blimey, Sykes, could I really? I am pretty near you probably. I'll email you now. SO kind of you - are you sure?

I'd recommend Emmaljunga pushchair with toddler seat. I bought mine via ebay and it cost around £60.00. DS was 19 months old when DD arrived and it's been invaluable. Now she's 9 months old she's frustrated at not being able to see out so I've now put a buggy board on DS's Maclaren. I still will probably end up needing a double buggy as buggy board isn't always appropriate but am resisting!

Dinny, will get my h to get it out of the loft on Thursday - so you should be able to come any time next week. Mornings - apart from Wednesday the girls are at school/doing things. I'll e-mail tomorrow with details. It's not grand but should be fine - the sort of one in front one behind. And on that score does anyone want a three-wheler. Tyre down but apart from that in very good condition. same thing - just make a donation to charity.

misdee · 09/03/2004 20:43

i'd love one sykes, but my hallway wont take anymore buggies and i dont need it lol. ok, i'm addicted to buggies.

sykes · 09/03/2004 20:45

I really want to get rid of it so it will be off to a charity shop - or should I ask if anyone in Surrey needs one/s London?

misdee · 09/03/2004 20:50

put it on the swops board. might get a taker.

dinny · 10/03/2004 22:01

Sykes, either next Tues or Thurs morning I could do. Let me know which best for you. Dinny
