Junior bed, extendable bed or proper single bed?

Thinking ahead a little...

DD will be 2yrs9mths when 2nd baby is born, so we'd like her in a bed before then to free up the cot (which she loves and sleeps very well in)

Would you go straight for a single bed with guards, or a junior bed (only same size as a cotbed??) or an extendable bed (eg Ikea)?

TIA

I'd go straigh for the ordinary single with side guards. It saves you buying all the extra bedding needed for an intermediate size bed.

Good thought, although I'm planning on keeping her in grobags until they stunt her growth

Proper single bed, but not too high, so maybe a wooden frame one etc. Much more flexible if people come to stay etc and they grow out of the junior ones so quickly.

Unless however space is an issue.....

Do not buy the IKEA extendable bed, its a nightmare. The slats keep falling out and is difficult to put back together.

Sounds like single it is then! Luckily her room is quite a good size.

Thanks for all your advice

WE got the mothercare extendable bed for ds and it is great. Mainly due to the fact his bedroom is tiny.

when my boys went into a bed a got them a juiour bed each (cot quilt fits it)
but i also put cot mattresses on floor incase they fell out (they didnt)
its up to you really depending how much room you have but deff look at bed height

Hi aw, seems great minds think alike, I'm just looking into moving ds into a bed. We think we'll get a thuka shorty bed like this so we can add a bunk, storage, extra bed when he's older. But I think the beds from aspace are really lovely too and might be my choice if I had a girl. They do one of those extending beds as well.

we went straight to proper singles - and used guards for a little while. I just don;t see the point of junior beds - they're a ploy to make us but two things when one will do. also much more useful - we can sleep guests in them.

I've had similar dilemma - I agree that junior beds are a bit of a sales ploy and my son was so big he has just about outgrown his cot at 7 months! I decided to get a single bed with a guard ready and it has another single bed underneath. Researched web to find nice sturdy pair for £199 which will be great when my neice comes to stay or son has a friend over, also good for when his dad comes to stay.

Thanks all for your advice

AQ - I DO like those Aspace ones, some of them aren't badly priced. Off to investigate further...

I'm quite taken with the captain's bed, completely gone off Thuka bed now as quite frankly I think it's ugly. Don't see why I should spend all this time decorating nursery only to buy ugly bed. Mothercare also have some lovely ones, they're on my short list. DP has retired from utter boredom as after 2 months all I've managed to do is decide on a duvet set (but not buy it).

If you're looking on web for those beds that are underneath you have to search for "guest beds suppliers" - took me ages to realise and there are only a few types and suppliers anyway. I looked at cabin beds etc but decided on a lower single bed type so not so high to fall out and so that it made bedtime story reading easier as otherwise you have to stand up !! Good luck with whatever you do!
