Handheld cordless hoovers - Are they any good?

I have had enough of getting the big hoover out to clean the cat hair off the sofa all the time so I'm tempted by the little cordless dustbuster type hoovers but overwhelmed by the choice in Argos..the prices range from £9 to about £50! Anyone recommend one. Thanks BB.

We've got a mid-range dustbuster (about £30 I think0 and it's fab. Use it to clear up glitter, stray bits on the kitchen floor, under the breadbin etc. We do wash it out regularly @cos even if you empty it immediately, it gets a bit grimy inside.

I've got a black and decker dust buster and I love it, chase after ds with it when he's dropped crumbs everywhere, much easier than the big hoover. Honestly it will be money well spent. I've told all my friends with kids/pets to get one.

We have got a dirt devil ..... wouldn't suck the skin of a rice pudding! ( DH's words )

I find that the pet hair is a REAL bind for us ... so I shall watch with interest !!

I am on my second dustbuster and couldn't live without it. I orginally had a lower voltage one but this time got a 9.6v which has a much stronger suction. We have a cat and the dustbuster is great from getting rid of cat hairs on sofa/carpet. Also use it after most meals to clean up crumbs under the table. Needs a good clean every couple of weeks or gets smelly - but that's dhs job

Must echo crystal tips disappoint in our dirt devil. It's rubbish.

LIZS · 05/03/2004 14:19

We've got a Dirt Devil Rascal - Wet and Dry. Doesn't hold charge for long and clogs really easily.

SoupDragon · 05/03/2004 14:27

I bought a £10 Dirt Devil from Tescos and it's great for quickly clearing up crumbs and stuff where you don't want the faff of the big hoover.

They do need to be kept fully charged and the charge is used fairly quickly but I wouldn't be without mine. Obviously they're weak compared to a hoover but it depends what you expect it to do really. You'd need a strong one for cat hair.

bluebear · 05/03/2004 15:01

Thanks everyone - summing up it seems dirt devil = bad, dustbuster = good

Dustbusters are ace - I would recommend getting the most high powered one you can afford though, I think the bottom of the range one isn't all that...

Mum2Ela · 05/03/2004 15:04

They are not good for hoovering up spiders. The spiders do not die in the process and crawl out all over you when you then do to empty it.

Take my word for it.

fisil · 05/03/2004 15:28

Life without a dustbuster is not worth contemplating!

JanZ · 05/03/2004 16:05

My Mum swears by hers - although she does go through them fairly quickly - about one every 18 months. I think the latest one (a Black & Decker one? I think) has lasted a wee while - but I think she paid a wee bit extra.

She also uses hers for cat hairs and the odd spill. I keep meaning to buy one, but never get round to it.

crystaltips · 05/03/2004 16:08

JanZ - so the cat hairs are sucked up then ? SOunds good to me ....
I haven't yet found one that does it properly.

M2E - what are you doing sucking up spiders in the first place ..... I would have vacated the property

Ailsa · 05/03/2004 18:52

This is what I've got - can use it with or without the long handle. I'm amazed at how much it picks up, and, it holds it's charge really well. It was great when I was pregnant and after I'd had my cs, didn't have to lug the Dyson about the house, especially upstairs.

cordless sweeper
