I need something like carpet squares or a thick rug to put on a hard floor for babies

I want to basically extend the usable area of a carpeted room in a church hall, into a larger, hard floored area, for young babies and their parents to sit on, so I need some sort of floor covering. I am sure there is something that would easily do the trick but am mentally drawing a blank. What can I get?

Sparkler, sorry, the link didn't work for me.

Does carpet have that gross foamy spongy stuff on the underside? I can't bear touching that stuff, it makes me feel revolting, so that would be a problem

Regarding the backing they tend to be either foam or like a canvas-type backing (foam backed usually cheaper).

Something else to consider (although its more for aesthetics)is the pile of the carpet -usually its tufts or loops. We were advised that with kids its best to have tufts as the loops can get caught on buckles, toys etc. and you end up with snags/pulls.

By the way I'm no carpet expert -its just that we've re-carpeted the childrens bedrooms in the last couple of years so I've had to try and find out all about this mystical world thats part of being a grown-up!

At the school I teach at they have 2 enormous carpet rugs which are stored around a plastic tube. They are hemmed and have a woven type back, that rubber stuff will come off in bits and be messy at best and dangerous at worst.

They are massively heavy and are seldom moved they just live at the edge of the hall.

elc do interlocking foam squares. Would wipe clean if necessary too. A pack of 4 are about 4ft square and cost £10 but registered childcare, playgroups and cm 's get a discount.

These cover a larger area than the usual foam puzzles. They offer discount on postage for bulk buys.

Bubble that is a good price. I am just thinking about how long it would take me to fit them together for each session though - I think carpet is the way to go.

Thanks for advice about tufts, and woven type backing. This is all really useful.

That's them, hub ! We've got some for under our trampoline on the patio.

FanjoandZooey · 29/07/2006 13:19

Sorry hub, much too small, much too expensive, much too fiddly to stick together each session.

I will investigate carpet, today. Where do they sell carpet?
