Do you own a chocolate fountain? If so, what make, where did you get it from and most importantly is it any good?

My birthday coming up in September and I was thinking of asking for one as a present. Not sure if they are worth while.

TIA

did you watch 'come dine with me' this week (ch4)? Toby Young used his for his dinner party and it went down quite well. I think if you do a fair bit of entertaining of you have lots of kids parties to do at home, it may be worthwhile!

That's cheap. I was browsing the web early and saw one on Prezzybox for £49.

I saw them for £29 in the Parcmarket at Centerparcs, Longleat and I so wish I'd got one.

Hijack - if anyone in South Wales or Basingstoke area is going to Centerparcs and wants to get me one I will pay them back and get it collected from their house. - Hijack over - sorry, just thought a choc fountain would be a good idea for ds's christening tea!

in a freak coincidence, DH was given one for his birthday on Saturday so I can give you a full rundown.

It's this one, but in manly black not pink.
We set it up after dinner on Saturday and ransacked the house for dippable items (found marshmallows, strawberries, apples, cherries and grapes).
We used 900g chocolate (came with it) melted in the microwave first, which gave good cascading effect, but five of us only ate about half the chocolate, maybe less - although by this point the cascade effect was looking a bit puny. And that was including drunkenly using straws to suck the chocolate directly out of the top of the fountain...
The spare chocolate we poured into a bowl and stuck in the fridge, but you're not meant to reuse it so I guess we'll just have to eat it cold.

They made a big deal about using the right type of chocolate so it melts and runs properly - you can use normal stuff but apparently you may have to add vegetable oil to it. The handbooks are available for download here and have a page in the back about how much oil to add to different brands of chocolate.

It was tremendous fun and very tasty. I suspect this is a bit of a craze though, like fondue sets were in the 70s - our kids will think them the height of naffness!
