Swim nappies or swimming shorts for 17 month old ... which are best?

Title says it all really - we've just bought a swimming pool for the garden and are going to start using it with our ds who is 17 months old. Can anyone tell me whether the little swimmers nappies are any good or whether it is better to get proper swimming shorts. He has only ever been in a paddling pool before and usually goes naked but feel it is probably better to put him in something in the pool.

I would trust swimming nappies rather more, however I tend to 'double bag' ds (2.3)(..i.e. use 2 swim nappies at once) after the pooey contents of his nappy escaped into the David Lloyd toddler pool in front of 20 watching fellow swimmers recently

I'd buy a pair of the proper swim nappies, they look like swimming trunks but have close fitting plastic lined pants inside to contain any little accidents. Floaties do a range, so does mothercare, and mail order catalogues like Jojo maman bebe. The Little Swimmers are fine but will cost you a fortune over a summer if you're out there most days. Mothercare's swim nappy is about £7 I think. Also depends how environmentally conscious you are too!!

Alternatively, put him in naked and buy a sieve .

I bought some proper swimming nappies for my ds and can vouch for the fact that if he wore them they would be no good at all for containing the humungus poos he does

sounds grim! not sure whether I should try one of the floaties swim suits with the floats in with a swim nappy underneath or whether to get him some kind of arm bands etc ..... he is usually pretty good about not pooing in water but knowing my luck handlemecarefully he will wait until a prime moment and follow your little ones lead! That really made me laugh!

Mine never seem to poo in the water. That being said, DS2 did poo while on the swings around a public paddling pool, and the reusable swim nappy held up fine.

cjmummy · 26/07/2006 21:44

do you put some kind of liner in the reusable nappies?

I don't. They basically nearly never poo in swim nappies, it's the first time I've had to deal with that.

thanks everyone ... I will have to go shopping after work tomorrow!
