I currently have a Skoda Octavia which is a little too wide for me. However I like the size of its boot and the fact that at nearly 1900cc it is a powerful car.

I have two DSs and usually drive around 120 miles a week. I want a diesel.

Can anyone suggest a make or model for me???

A couple of things to point out. I assume your current octavia is a diesel? It really isn't a powerful car I'm afraid. Probably similar in performance to a 1.6 petrol. The mileage you are doing is unsuitable for many modern diesels and is also well below the threshold for a diesel making economic sense. I'd suggest something like a 1.6 Civic or Cee'd. Something with a small petrol engine from the east will probably give you the easiest ownership experience.

I agree with Bartman that you should get a petrol engined car for that sort of mileage. If your Octavia is a 1.9 then it must be reasonably old.

Most modern cars are of a similar width, so you won't be able to get something much thinner.

Are you looking to buy new?

At about 6000 miles a year you will probably kill a modern (

If you're going for something new, I'd recommend something like the Ford Focus with the 1.0 Ecoboost engine; unfortunately it's wider than the Octavia, so no good there.

I looked up the 1.9 tdi Octavia and its hugely underpowered with just 105bhp and glacial acceleration times. You'll find most new cars on sale will out perform it. To echo what WM said the new Ford Ecoboost is a good engine my only concern would be potential big bills down the line as it's a pretty high tech engine.

Wow! thanks everyone!
Interesting thoughts on petrol v diesel. I just automatically thought diesels would be better value.
no, I'm not looking to buy new. and yes, my current car (well, the mangled wreck sitting on my driveway) is eight years old.
