should children be allowed more than 1 a day?

Is too much a bad thing?

I would not give more than one as they are sweet and quite calorific and expensive..

and the benefits are not greater for taking more than one..in fact one for a child is probably more than enough for the probiotic benefit

YellowFeathers · 22/07/2006 10:41

Its just dd loves them. MIL has been letting her have as many as she wants when shes been looking after her and then the next day she has full on diorreah.

Dh buys them occasionaly but she doesn't have them.

Just wondered if anyone elses children had them or a similar problem with them?

I'd say she doesn't need them at all, really - they're marketing in a bottle. More than one definitely not good if she has diarrhoea the next day though.

YellowFeathers · 22/07/2006 10:46

My thoughts exactly. Which is why I don't buy them.

Prebiotic my ar*!

Just something to turn your stomaches

Did I mention she gave her Mcdonalds for lunch 2 days running
Thank god shes coming home today!!!

How long's she been staying with MIL? Bet you've missed her!

I was going to start a thread about those drinks the other day - then the fruit shoot one kicked off and I thought...ah, wait a while

zippitippitoes · 22/07/2006 10:55

oh good i can give you a proper reply

no one pot is one too many they have a ridiculous amount of sugar and are a triumph of marketing over common sense

and they are not aimed at children either if they were they would probably be illegal

it's not the probiotics that are at fault it is the way they have been manufactured to make them desirable

hunkermunker · 22/07/2006 10:57

Zippi, you want to start the thread then? Or come and post on it when I do...!

psychomum5 · 22/07/2006 10:59

Mine have them.....they were recommended by my paediatrition for them wehn they are on antibiotics so often, and also some now have omega 3 too so my boys have them for that reason.

I know they era full of suger, but then so is their soya milk, and my paed says that even milk intolerant kiddies can tolerate these, so I allow.

Only for expense tho are they only allowed one per day, altho whether they would be ok to have more, I don't really know...

YellowFeathers · 22/07/2006 11:01

Shes been there since Thursday. Too long!
I've spoke to her on the phone this morning and all she kept saying was I want you, I want to cuddle you!

Go on start a thread....
I could rant about these forever. They will be my version of the weaning spoon of Hunkers

I think I'm giving up..too many accusations of being smug

the food industry amazes me by its ability to sell vast quantities of anything other than regular food and how they can take a good idea "prebiotics" and massacre it in the same way as they do fruit and water. Just for the sake of value added..read massive profit.

iPodthereforiPoor · 22/07/2006 21:50

Is it true that they actually don't have any real benefit because any actibve ingrediant is destroyed by stomach acid? - and it needs to be specially coated to withstand the process??

I really should know considering my degree in biomedical sciences but I liked drinking and playing with boys too much to have benefited from 3yrs at Soton Uni!

zippitippitoes · 22/07/2006 22:13

it depends which ones you use and how many you have..the larger ones can survive stomach acid

Mala · 22/07/2006 22:23

I must be in a minority here as I think they are great. One a day is fine, though occasionally dd does have two. She has had it for a couple of years and it has helped her. I have read a fair few papers on them and clinical trials have shown that they can benefit people, particularly those on antibiotics. There has also been a couple of trials carried out on young children/babies, so they are in no way harmful to children. You don't have to take them in dairy form if worried about the sugar content. Yes the advertising is ott and don't think it is for everyone, but think it can help some people with stomach problems.

misdee · 22/07/2006 22:28

Peter was advised to have these after the hospital basically 'steralised' his gut after op and strong IV antibiotics. i have tried for years unsuccessfully to get my dd1 to drink them. dd2 loves them, and has one in the morning after breakfast. her skin is so much smoother these days.

dd3 is too young atm IMO to have them. and she is still breastfed so gets her goodness from me.
