Ds bedroom window opens very wide so when he is in his room we have had to shut his window as I think he would try to lean out. I need to find something to put over the window from the inside in order to be able to open the window but ds be able to go in his room as especially in this weather it is like a furness. So I challenge mners to help me.

Could you use a garden gate?

A wrought Iron one - it's much cheaper than a guard

It can be fitted on hinges at one side - for ease of cleaning and a padlock at the other

would a window catch that allows the window to open a couple of inches but no further help?

curtaintwitcher · 21/07/2006 21:38

katymac..dont think gate would work as it would have to be inside and dont think there would be enough room.

Mrsbadger that catch looks like a great idea..would have to see if it would fit window.

window catch would not work as its screw in and window is double glazed.

Why don't you try a local metalworks/welding type company (What are they called? My mind has gone blank!). We've just had a big balcony rail made to our design and it was much less than I thought it would be.

MrsBadger · 21/07/2006 21:58

how does the window open?

If it's a sash type that slides up, wedging the slide with a dowel above the bottom pane so it can't go higher than a couple of inches will work.
If it swings open from the top, it might be possible to adjust the current stops in the grooves at the sides, or even add new ones. - have a look at how the hinges move as you open and close it.
If it opens like a door, there'll probably be a catch to fit it somewhere!

just remember whatever you do not to use horizontal bars - too much of a climbing risk.

one of those folding security grilles might work, and will fold away behind curtains when you don't need it.

BettySpaghetti · 21/07/2006 22:01

lol - you don't sound as if you've got much faith in his DIY skills

curtaintwitcher · 21/07/2006 22:01

it is like a door but doesnt have the safety brackets on as it is the only fireescape window upstairs. With it being double glazed difficult to find locks that dont screw in as wont be able to put them in as they weaken the frames apparently. It is ds room and he likes to look out the window so I cant leave it open plus dd will be in there with him soon.
