Apparently, technogel (under cover) wipes clean reducing build up of skin etc.
Apparently with pocket sprung 1/3 of weight after three years is dead cells...

Yes I would. We spent a similar ridiculous amount on a new mattress (Vi spring) a few years ago. We had had the previous one (normal, not very expensive) for over 20 years and hadn't really realised how old it had got. We took hours choosing the new mattress, though. Practically slept the afternoon at the store trying to decide which one was best for us.

Now, every night when I get into bed I am glad that we bought it. It is a real treat. And it also means that my back tends to be okay when I get up in the mornings, which is important.

if you both have joint problems - and you are absolutely sure that this particular one is the mattress that will help that - then I would prioritise spending on it. It's not only your night's sleep that is affected, but how well your body works during the day.

See if you get it cheaper on line. I spent a few hours laying on beds in a shop, chose the one I wanted, it was 2k and then got in online for £1100.

elskovs · 23/11/2013 22:10

Depends. How much did you get in total?

MaryZygon · 23/11/2013 22:11

No, not 2,800. But certainly quite a bit as my back is dodgy.

I think when we got married ours cost £500 and lasted ten years. We then upgraded to a 6 foot bed and the mattress was about €900. It has lasted 15 years, so less than 3 cent a night, which seems pretty good value to me.

Inherited £10,000. Want to use for something special as can see the text vanishing on boring stuff Confused

Yeah if I was loaded.

Our mattress cost a fair bit and it it the most comfortable bed in the world. As someone ^ up there said.. You spend half your life in bed.

ZombieMonkeyButler · 23/11/2013 22:21

I don't even spend that much on my car when I change it Grin.

I probably wouldn't personally but it's a much better investment than many things you could buy. If you want it, go for it.

MaryZygon · 23/11/2013 22:29

No, don't spend 2800 out of 10000 on a mattress.

Spend 7 to 9 hundred or up to 1000.

That gives you 5000 to save and 4000 for a bloody good holiday.

EXTERMINATEpeppa · 23/11/2013 22:32

noo!

lifesgreatquestions · 23/11/2013 22:37

Get the best mattress you can afford, "best" being the one in your price range you most prefer. And totally second the idea of going king... ahhhh... the room!

ILoveAFullFridge · 23/11/2013 22:46

How long have you spent trying it out together in the shop? Are you convinced it's the right mattress? Does the shop give you the option of returning it after, say, a month of use?

Have you considered a latex mattress? I'm always banging on about latex mattresses when the subject comes up on MN 100% latex really is an excellent alternative to fancy Tempur etc. Still not cheap - our king-size was about £800 seven years ago, IIRC - but fantastic. Supportive, retain much less heat than Tempur, hostile to dust mites, do not transmit the other sleeper's movement,do not need turning.

breatheslowly · 23/11/2013 22:48

Ours probably cost that. It was a present, but none the less, I would spend that much myself too if it wasn't going to push me into debt. I think that if I am going to spend 8 hours a night in bed, it is reasonable to spend money on making sure it is comfortable. I only spend about 20 min a day in my car, but it cost more and has running costs too.

I think that most people are a bit Hmm about other people's spending on things they see as luxuries. I'd never get a £300 handbag or Sky TV. It really is each to their own.

Choosing our mattress was lovely. I went to a very large John Lewis and felt like Goldilocks. I started at the low price ones and tried them out in pairs going up by price until they stopped getting more comfortable as the price went up.

MatildaWhispers · 23/11/2013 22:51

I absolutely would not. I currently have an ikea mattress covered with a double duvet as a kind of cheap and cheerful mattress topper, and that works fine for me!

MrGeresHamster · 23/11/2013 22:51

No. But luckily pils did for us. Our only problem is that it has ruined overnight travel anywhere for us... can't wait to get home to OUR bed for a proper nights sleep!

breatheslowly · 23/11/2013 22:57

That is so true MrGeresHamster.

Suttonmum1 · 23/11/2013 23:02

Only from John Lewis. Husband had issues with ours being too hard and they replaced it for free.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 25/11/2013 14:22

MrGeres - yes we are the same, we love our bed!

My lovely parents bought us a very nice kingsize for our room at their house so that we have a fabulous bed there too Grin

Joycey29 · 26/11/2013 17:30

Price now £2385 due to hubby's hip so no VAT...
