A sling for a nearly 12mo - good idea or plain daft?

Taking ds to a local festival at end of July. He will be nearly 1 and is not especially lightweight...and I am not exactly big and strong.
Will be taking buggy but would prefer freedom of carrier - but our carrier is one of those metal framed ones and is almost as tall as me!

So...I was wondering...would a sling do the trick? TAke some of his weight and leave at least one hand free to hold beer/pancake?

You could try a hipseat - you still have to hold him on though.

Or a ring or pouch sling.

misdee · 11/07/2006 19:24

last week i carried my dd3 round london with ease using a calin bleu guaze wrap sling. i have a moby wrap for sale, cost 25, want reasonable offers. if you are going to the festival with someone then you may manage a back carry with ease. i dont have anyone to help me get dd3 into a back carry so use the front cross carry with her facing outwards.

hunkermunker · 11/07/2006 19:25

Ah, yes, or a wrap sling.

Yeah, give it a go.

I'm finding it easier to use a ring sling for short periods with DS2 atm - but for longer periods I'd probably still use my wrap sling.

misdee · 11/07/2006 19:27

i keep the ring sling in the car for quick trips out, but the wrap sling is an essentially piece of equipment, only wish i had known about them with dd1+2. maybe i'd have a sling addiction and not a buggy addiction

JessaJam · 11/07/2006 19:34

so...am I right in thinking a wrap sling is basically a long length of fabric...which you sort of crisscross over baby and you?

In which case...and please let me down gently...could I save the money and just use a 5metre length of material...??

OP posts:
misdee · 11/07/2006 19:45

you could, but finding 5 metres of fabric thats strong enough to hold your baby woiuld be hard..........

go on, buy the moby from me.....

its navy blue.

misdee · 11/07/2006 19:45

i mean strong enough and under £25 of course.

JessaJam · 11/07/2006 19:51

I am tempted misdee...is it strong enough for a gurt big lump of a baby?! If I going to spend money on it I'd like to be able to use it more than once or twice...

OP posts:
JessaJam · 11/07/2006 19:52

may vanish in a few minutes as ds is twitching...but will be back...

misdee · 11/07/2006 20:52

what weight is he? approx?

JessaJam · 11/07/2006 20:55

25lb?...10-11kg a month or so ago...?

no, get a lovely mei tai. so much easier to use!

misdee · 11/07/2006 20:56

dd3 is 21-22lb and still carry her easily.

hairymclary · 11/07/2006 20:58

sorry for just jumping in here
I am a bit of a sling addict too and happily carry my 17 month old around for ages. At 12 months he was nearly 25lb so you should be fine

PrettyCandles · 11/07/2006 20:59

I got a Coorie when dd was 15m - and she was and still is a big girl - and it was very useful. And cheap! But it was still hard work carrying her on one side. We have a framed back-carrier for hiking, which is easier on the spine and shoulders than a one-sided sling - but expensive, and, as you say, tall. I wonder whether a Wilkinet would work for you? It can certainly take the weight of a toddler, and can be worn on the back. They're a bit of a faff to tie until you're used to them, but they are very lightweight and pack into a very small and compact bundle.

LeahE · 11/07/2006 21:00

We use an Ergo with DS and he's nearly 18 months (no idea how heavy he is, but he's above average height).

SoupDragon · 11/07/2006 21:02

Pouch sling (Coorie or Kimmer). Fab.

JessaJam · 11/07/2006 21:06

mei tai thingy looks great too!
Oh if only I was rich and didn't find the whole process of spending money so unpleasant!

Jumping in, whats the best sling for occasional use (up to an hour) carrying an active 15 month old who weighs 21lb? Ideally I'd like to use it until he is at least 2yrs old.
I'd also like one that I can carry him on my hip/side cos he gets crotchety on my back!

I've looked at the hipseats and like the fact they they are foolproof to figure out how to put on but I would like to have the option of having both hands free.

misdee · 17/07/2006 13:04

again a wrap sling or ringsling would be your best option. the wraps can be ted for hip carries, and the ring lsing is pretty much a hip carrier at this stage.

jessajames, igot your cheque at he weekend, but cantbank it today as my dd1 is ill, one i have banked it will get the sling out to you via recorded delivery.

riab · 17/07/2006 13:07

I've just found a Mei hip wrap from ellaroo - anyone had experience with this?

A bit cheeky, I know, but I have a ring sling like this for sale. It's a burgundy, "Coorie and Carry", cost £27 new and has hardly been used. I'm open to offers....

JessaJam · 17/07/2006 13:24

Thanks misdee!
