Is there a cure for dandruff?

I suffer terribly off and on (more on than off) with dandruff. Nothing seems to help - I've tried various shampoos including prescription ones, have cut out yeast from my diet and try very hard to cut out sugar. Does anyone know of an effective remedy? Would appreciate any advice.

Since being pregnant with dd (now 23 months old) i have suffered with really bad dandruff the only thing i find that works is - Pantene anti dandruff (only available in big boots) have also had presc ones but no good.

HTH

I had been planning to ask the very same question! So will be hoping for wise words.
I was wondering if there was a hormonal reason as I dont think I was troubled by it when pregnant, but otherwise on and off for years and years, too.

I get it every so often when I am stressed. I find Nizoral ( the pink bottle £8.95, but lasts ages as only a tiny amount is needed) off the chemist counter very good, but it does dry your hair out, but works wonders on your scalp.

I also find using the same shampoo for a long time, gives me dandruff, so I try and change my brand often.

funny story first - my dad had a bath and came downstairs complaining to my mother about not being able to rinse off the new shampoo left by the taps. Well he hadn't got his glasses on and had used 2001 -carpet shampoo. But he did say it cured his dandruff

My old hairderssed used to swear by anything acidic, eg lemon or vinegar, depending on blonde or brunette, in the final rinse. Something to do with an alkaline build-up. It worked for me when I needed it.

I think it is bog standard dandruff - no itchiness, redness, tightness etc. Have tried the olive oil and found it does help. Have been using Nizoral shampoo for ages but it's not so effective now and I don't think it's good for your hair or for long term use. Pehaps I'll try 1001 (that's one thousandand one) carpet shampoo next time

littlerach, was that lemon for blonde and vinegar for brunette?

i thought i had it and tried most products available then realised it was just dry skin. now use 'tei tao' shampoo (the green one) which is the only shampoo that has worked for me. hope this helps.

btw, bogof in safeway this week!

I suppose you've tried T-Gel? We have the "therapeutic" one - it says it's for "scalp psoriasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis (dry, itching scalp)". It's coal tar based and you're supposed to leave it on for a few minutes - my hairdresser suggested it and it does seem to work quite well.

chocbox · 28/02/2004 22:02

Yes, tried it but was only effective for first few weeks. Has anybody come across David Kingsley Products. Somebody mentioned a shampoo that costs about £16 for a small bottle but I would prefer recommendations before I invest! Just heard on radio that garlic tablets help.

No - had it all my life, to a lesser or stronger degree. But it has been a bad day.... If I don't scrape dd2's hair with the brush it turns into cradledap. So she has got some of my genes. So fed up today .....

Chocbox have you ever see a dermatologist as apparently if this is a persistent and ongoing thing then its definitely worth it. I suffer from a very dry scalp myself and I think the fact that I have colour on my hair doesnt help either! Another thing that I heard was that a problem like this can come from within (liver I think) so drinking plenty of water could help? Sorry Im not certain these will be worth a try. HTH. x

I get awful dandruff unless I use Head&Shoulders regulary. If I have been to the hair dressers and they use something else, it's right back. I then have to use Nizorol (chemist or GP) for a day or two to get rid and then back to H&S. Hope this helps.
