Toddler drinking cups

popsycal · 21/02/2004 11:58

We haev alsorts of cups for my 18 months old ds.

Avent ones, anyway up cups, normal toddler beakers without any valve, kids on the go sports bottle.....

The question is which is best for his teeth? He normally drinks just water and milk. He is currently having his milk in a bottle still but I am conscious that I want to get him off the bottle very soon.

My gut feeling is that the non-spill valve cups are as bad as bottles for teeth (???). However, we need non-spill ones most of the time for when we are out and about or Ds is at childminders etc.

Any mumsnet wisdom appreciated

I know what you mean about the cups still being as bad as bottles, I'm luck my dd came off her bottle very easy at 12 months she is now 18 months and i've been thinking about this recently - you are very luck that your ds only drinks water my dd will only drink juice, however I only give her no added sugar (cant find sugar free) diluted juice and only a small about to water. I have started wondering when she will be able to drink from a cup am I way ahead of myself.

There's a Tommee Tippee one that is approved by the British Dental Association - to get their water/juice out of it they need to sort of bite down on the spout rather than suck, as it is the sucking action that isn't good for teeth.

I think this was the first one to be approved by the BDA but others have come out since then.

Here's the Tommee Tippee one

Thank you clearwater I was away looking at dd's cup to try and see if it had a name on it - it didnt and its not the same as this one

The Avent 'Magic Sportster' cup is the one I use for my ds, it holds a decent amount for long journeys, is reliably non-spill, and is also approved by the British Dental Health Foundation. Was going to do a link to it on the Avent website but couldn't. You prob know which one anyway.

I found the name of my dd's cup - Mandy Haberman's Anyway Cup for 12+ - should I change this

ClearWater · 21/02/2004 12:59

Might be better long-term for your dd's teeth if you switched to the Avent or Tommee Tippee one.

Re an open top cup, you could try her with just a little bit of juice in the bottom of one when she is in her high chair, see how she goes?
Don't be disappointed if she just tips it out though, she is young still for an open cup! Worth a try though.

OK, I might be shouted down here, but I think the dangers of bottles are exaggerated. Isn't the theory that some children tend to suckle slowly on a bottle, so that the milk/whatever is in the mouth for longer? If so then surely a child who guzzles her bottle down and has her teeth cleaned fairly soon after is in no danger?

Dd still has a bottle sometimes, and she's 21 months. Usually we use a variety of cups/sports bottles, including normal cups (though I usually hold those to her mouth). So I wouldn't worry really. my worry is the amount of biscuits/ lollies people keep giving her!

Agree with sp. I wouldnt put anything with sugar if i was using bottles but I think problems are more to do with prolonged use ie bottle in teh mouth for a long time especially before going to sleep without brushing teeth.

My DD (17 months) has water from an avent no-spill cup or a normal sports bottle, during the day. At mealtimes she sometimes has juice and she drinks this from a normal cup, no probs. She still has milk for bed and although she has this from her avent cup I am not too worried about her teeth as she downs 2 cups in about 3 seconds!

Have to admit though - I don't always bruch her teeth before bed (bad mummy) and need to get in the routine of doing so.

fairydust · 21/02/2004 18:05

We use the tommee tippee one - but the one with out handles - only have bottle till bed.

KatieMac · 21/02/2004 18:43

I only offer juice at mealtimes and replace with water when they leave the table - waters fine and I've converted 5 children (who never touch water) to drinking 2/3 cups of water between meals

try this one
This is by tommee tippee - we have one but ds still needs help with this
You can use the straw but the best bit is that it has a lid with a hole in that is designed so that you can drink from it like a real cup but only a small amount of the drink comes out as it has to come through the whole. Great for the next stage.

BTW - I tried to drink from all of ds's cups tonight as an experiment (no comments please!!!) - has anyone tried to drink from an anyway up cup - don't know how it is posible!

Am v interested in this. I have a 22 month ds and I took his bottle away from him a little while ago but since then he has refused all milk in any other cup. He drinks water and diluted juice in a cup , just not milk. I decided a few nights ago that I would rather he drank milk in a bottle rather than not at all and so gave him the milk in a bottle at night. He is very happy and I will keep trying to give milk to him in another cup. I feel he still needs a lot of milk and this was the best way.

PS- I used to work for a dentist and his little girl had milk at night in a bottle til she was 3!!

champs · 22/02/2004 00:01
