Who makes nice kitchens?

We're having an extension done for a bigger kitchen and separate laundry room. I've never had a kitchen chosen by me before so I'm quite excited but I'm having trouble finding a nice quality but not top-of-the-range, bespoke type kitchen. ie. I don't want to spend loads of money on a designer name like Mark Wilkinson but do want good quality. The only company so far that seems to fit the bill is Magnet. Are they any good and are there any others?
Also, I'd like a cheaper but still nice range of units for the laundry room. Which of the more budget-type ones are good?

we got ours from MFI and its okay (fitters were useless and made no end of mistakes tho!)

should be getting my extension in about 4wks (so excited) new dining room, bathroom, study, bedroom and utility room with toilet, have started sale shopping for all those extra little finishes

Where are you based?, I know a good local company in the East Mids who have just done my kitchen - they do deliver to London etc but its hard to choose a product when you may be so far away.

Alipiggie · 30/06/2006 04:04

Ikea kitchen fan here, good quality. Very reasonable but then get a good carpenter/joiner in to fit it in for you. If you want I can email you a picture of what ours in Scotland looked like. Cost us about 3.5k finished for large space and ceiling and flooring.

I think Magnet kitchens are lovely, I am getting one for my kitchen. However, a word of warning - do not in any circumstances get them to fit it. Get a good builder who has experience in fitting kitchens and knows the product.

For a bit more, but not top dollar, we had one from John Lewis of Hungerford , which we love and 8 years or so on is wearing very well.

wouldn't go with Magnet personally

you could find a local carpenter and get them to replicate the kitchen you want

Homebase and B&Q do pretty decent quality kitchens (certainly on a parr with Magnet)

I think it all comes down to your worksurface, tiles and handles ... so blow your budget there rather than on the units ..get classic cupboard doors and don't be taken in by 'trends of the moment'

I called an expensive company at the back of one of the style magazine .. the S of Devize one (can't remember the name now .. but famous with footballer's wives) .... they do bespoke .. I thought I'll bulk up my budget cos I just want to see if they really come up with something special .. so told them I had 25K to spend JUST on the kitchen "sorry madame" says they "our kitchens start at 40,000"

.. 40K ... didn't include fitting .. Why would anyone pay that???????

robinia · 30/06/2006 11:40

That's exactly what I'm like - why pay loads of money when you can get just as good for less. (Smallbone btw).

I looked at Homebase though and they didn't seem as nice quality as Magnet. Is it just price that put you off Magnet or something else. Good tip about not getting them to fit though - presumably they're useless!

JL of H look nice - will depend on price!

Thanks for the help.

I'm not even supposed to be thinking of kitchens yet but I've just requested a JL of H catalogue now...

ComeOVeneer · 30/06/2006 11:57

this is our kitchen (red alder) from a company called INTOTO (not cheap but not hideously expensive and imo very good quality and service, (even made us a custom fit cupboard to hid our wall boiler thrown into the price of the kitchen.)

CountessDracula · 30/06/2006 12:11

Magnet do bespoke kitchens I am amazed!

I t depends on what style you want

I got my bespoke kitchen here they will make to whatever size/shape you want. You have to get them painted though.

CountessDracula · 30/06/2006 12:12

ps it was v cheap about £3k for all the cupboards. Got the worktop separately but they do them

Another Ikea fan - I've had two kitchens (2 different houses) from there and they are great. Got a good joiner to put it in though.

MyKidsAreModels · 30/06/2006 13:06

if you're within M25 I can recommend a kitchen fitting company

Hi,

If you are in London, Ascot or Essex have a look at Nicholas Anthony (i work for them!) they are expensive but really they will try to work to your budget. The stuff is beautiful!
