Suggestions for new vacuum cleaner please?

Can anyone suggest a small drag-along (is that the term!?) vacuum cleaner (ie not upright). We've got wooden floors downstairs and carpet going up the stairs and into the bedrooms. Looking for something small with plenty of clout!! Any suggestions welcome. Thank you...

How about one of the smaller Henry vacuums?

fairydust · 17/02/2004 14:39

we've just brought a drag along dyson and it is brill - does carpet - wooden flooring etc

we've got a lovely little blue miele drag along one, from john lewis who suggested it because we have a couple of carpets but mostly varnished floorboards. works for us.

Henrys are no good if you've got thick pile carpet, esp with dog or cat hairs, cos it's really hard work to get the hairs out with one. They are good on hard floors tho, and getting stuff out from under the cooker etc.

We still have our old Henry, but bought a dyson (ours is upright), which is best ever on the carpets. I believe the drag-along dysons also have a spinning brush in the business end, to get stuff out of the carpet.

(sorry, not very techie with terms am I?)

Sebo cylinder is very good. apparently recommended by John lewis.
Bags - but I can tell you a LOT easier to change than the dysoin cylinders that end up down your front

noddy5 · 17/02/2004 18:29

miele cat and dog is excellent whether you have pets or not

GenT · 17/02/2004 20:01

meile cat and dog

dyson is difficult with those attachments to clean stairs, don't think I would buy a dyson

Anyone got one of those little robot ones that cost about a grand and do the hoovering without you? Do they work?

LadyCodworth · 17/02/2004 20:11

my cleaner?

Emmalou · 20/02/2004 15:18

Sebo is brill.

Crunchie · 20/02/2004 15:24

Henry is fantatsic and indistructable. Get one with the extra 'turbo' brush head thingy

Northerner · 20/02/2004 15:24

Dyson Dyson Dyson Dyson Dyson ............ I LOVE my Dyson and would not buy any other brand.

Northerner · 20/02/2004 15:25

Hate Henry's. Reminds me of my chamber maiding days.

CountessDracula · 20/02/2004 15:25

My cleaner loves my dyson

I couldn't comment really as only use it about once a year!

auntymabel · 20/02/2004 15:28

I love my Dyson "drag along" cylinder vac too. I find it okay for the stairs - I use the attachment you might use for sofas etc, with the little velour bits on. I have laminate floor downstairs and carpet on steps and upstairs. I think it's great for both.

Courtesy of Argos, I've been through about five vacuum cleaners in the last year (not ripping them off, just didn't live up to their expectations, or if they did, not for long). Wouldn't (after four of them! touch Dyson with a bargepole now). Miele's cat and dog - even if you haven't got either - is a wonderful cylinder vacuum cleaner. (Did I really say that - makes mental note to get out more ....)

carla · 20/02/2004 15:56

OK - really anal - forgot to add that it's really quiet and has a rotating brush, just like an upright

josiejump · 20/02/2004 23:31

Just bought a Miele cat and dog ( no pets but the salesman said we qualify with the 3 kids!). It's fab! Have almost filled the bag in the first 2 weeks, it picks up so much. The mini turbo brush is great for the stair carpets.
