Moving dd to DOUBLE bed - bad idea?

We have a cot which dd sleeps in but she will be turfed out when the new arrival arrives in August. Dd was only in the moses basket for about a month so I envisage the same thing happening with the new baby, therefore dd will be nearly 2 when she needs to be moved.

Me and dh have decided to buy a king size bed for ourselves and the double that we are replacing is a decent one and we don't want to just 'bin' it. Is it a bad idea for dd to use it? I think she will get 'lost' in it after being in a cot but a few friends say it will be fine. Hmmmmmmmm

My dd still uses her moses basket during the day and she is 4 months. If I were you I'd get her a bid, Ikea do ones you can adjust the length really easily.

I think she'll be fine, assuming that the bed isn't too high. Our DD has always preferred the spare (double) bed to her own. She keeps suggesting that she swaps bedrooms so she can sleep in it all the time (goes in there as a treat when she's poorly). The only thing is whether there will be room for all her other stuff if she has a small bedroom!

I got bunk beds for my boys when they moved out of cots. Didn't raise them up till they were going to school but because they had sides, they were perfect for little people who might roll out of bed.

ds1 slept on a double futon for several months after he climbed out of his cot at the age of 19 months. I thought there would be less chance of him rolling off- I made a nest for him in the centre with pillows along the edge. I used the futon as it was low to the ground. I put him in a single bed after a few months.

Ds1 and ds2 sleep in a king size together, because ds1 isn't old enough to go in a top bunk yet imo. They love it, always playing and cuddling in the mornings. And if one of them wakes up in the night, i can just sneak into bed with them, until they nod off again.

My stepdaughter went straight into a double bed which she still has at age 12. There is no reason whatsoever why not. She is rather less likely to roll out of a double than a single and they are no higher than normal single beds. A few pillows on the floor will provide cushioning. The other alternative is to buy a cheap cot or borrow one for your new arrival and leave your dd in her own bed until she feels ready. My ds is 2.5 and very content in his cot and I really wouldn't like to move him yet.

DS sleeps in double bed no problems at PILs. See no difference really.

Clayhead · 17/02/2004 12:29

My friend put her dd in a double at 18 months and she's been fine, loves it in fact.

fio2 · 17/02/2004 12:34

I cant see a problem either oliveoil. It is easier to get in with her then if she wakes.

Lou33 I think it is so sweet that your ds's sleep together in one...cute

Only thing though I get cold in the double when dh is not in with me, am I the only one this happens to?

Thanks for these positive views. I am trying to save any spare cash for my 'maternity fund' so I can have as much time off work as poss, if we had to buy a bed for dd as well as our kingsize, I would be skint.

I did wonder whether she was too young for a bed but my friend (who is now having her 4th!!!!!) has bumped hers out each time, otherwise she would have lots of redundant cots everywhere.

Think we will go for bunk beds when they are older, if I have another girl anyway, I loved sharing a room with my sister.

my son has had a double for ages dont get rid of a perfectly good bed they love the space !

prettycandles · 17/02/2004 15:21

I slept in a double from about 5yo and loved it. Ds often sleeps in a double when he naps at my parents and, as he is still in a cot at home, I pile cushions or folded blankets around the edge and he loves the nest that it makes. Go for it - why waste a perfectly good bed? You can always sell it and replace with a single if it doesn't work out.

zebra · 17/02/2004 15:40

I slept in a double bed, too, from about 3yo. It was great; I liked all the room! Same bed I was conceived in (yes my parents were wanna-be hippies that told me that kind of information).

I could tell dd the same thing, ha ha ha ha

my dd2 is mov9ing into a double bed. ashe has spent a few short spells in it when she has been playing up. it is going to be her bed when she moved out of her cot for good as its the only bed available and i also cant afford to get another single, and no room to store a perfectly good almost new double bed.

Azure · 17/02/2004 18:54

I was born in the same bed my mother was born in. I assume they had changed the mattress.

lou33 · 18/02/2004 14:13

Fio, it's made them both better sleepers, and I get a bit of time before I have to get up, as they entertain each other!
