Stainless steel, glass or tiles for splashback?

That's it, really. Getting a new kitchen (hooray!) and trying to decide what to go for. Going for quite a contemporary looking kitchen and trying to decide what kind of splashback to install behind the hob. Like the look of glass (especially) or stainless steel, but am worried that either would be a nightmare to keep clean. Also wonder whether they might be looking a bit dated in 5 years or so as fashions change. But then again, maybe a tiled splashback might already look dated now and they might never come back into fashion...
So many decisions. Such an indecisive person. Help!

We've got glass and I'm really pleased with it.It doesn't show the dirt/watermarks unlike my stainless steel fridge.

Personally I think glass or tiles. I have a stainless steel range sooker which drives me CRAZY. I wish we had gone for not stainless steel.

Stainless steel may look lovely at the beginning but it gets so dirty so quickly, even the brushed type. If it's a splashback then it will look really dirty and you will be fed up with it after a while

Call me a saddo but I am forever cleaning my cooker and then wiping it down with oil to make it look nice - god it pisses me off!

Had my stainless steel splashback for about 2 months - and it drives me mad! Clean. polish, wipe, buff..... ad nausium

I would go for galss - but I am not that brave lol!

Stainless steel will be a nightmare to keep clean, like Sandradee my hob is enough to drive me nuts! and agree with everything she's said, looks great but is a massive, massive pita.. as is my high gloss worktop! I do love it though - just hell to keep clean.

Also think how awkward it is to really clean that are well and not just smear the grime around.. I went for natural material tiles and they are fab, better than the glossy tiles that were there before, you can't see the grease at all.

we've got glass too and its brill. its a frosted sheet that came from b&q 'it' range, was about £70. fits behind the gas hob.

Hmmm, not many votes for stainless steel then... Thanks for all your help. The comments about stainless steel have only confirmed what I already suspected. So now it's down to glass or tiles....

Sounds like a silly question, but what do you do about window sills if you have a glass splashback? Our sink will be going under the window and so we could have a glass splashback against the wall behind the sink. But what do you do about the actual horizontal sill part? This is tiled at the moment. Do you get a piece of glass to cover it, a wooden window sill, tiles, plaster...?

We had this - two were tiled one was wood, went with the wood sill in the end as I prefer wood and I don't like tiles IYSWIM also tiles would have meant either tiling half the kitchen or haveing a strange ending line - in middle of nowhere or stepped down etc.

They look really nice now and am really pelased with them!

I have glass tiles which have a white paint backing (so look white glass, you can get other colours.

They look really good and are so easy to clean. To add to the affect we had them tiles in a bricktype pattern. And go up the wall in line with the cooker hood etc, then along the wall in 2 or 3 lines (not sure without looking).

So I don't think it is just about what product you get but also how you use it.

my tip for keeping that area clean is to stand large baking trays up at the back when using the hob to so they get splashed instead

I am just having 2 huge tiles behind our range cooker i had that in my last house and it looked great and it is easy to clean.Our cooker is stainless steel and has only been fitted about 2 weeks and it is filthy but I had one before and knew what to expect so can't really moan.

I've got a stainless steel splashback and I love it. What's with all the faffing about cleaning it? Just use an e cloth. Perfect results.

So a stainless steel one is more hygenic because you clean it after every use. It's not hard work if you do it each time.

That's why professionla kitchens are stainless steel.

I leave the cleaning of my hob to dh - he is rather anal about it. I don't do the rings right apparantly.
