Digital radios - Anyone got one ?

My radio reception at home is driving us nuts. Half the time it's ok but the rest it's very fuzzy and we are constantly re-tuning it.

We are thinking of buying a digital one Does anyone have one and if so are they any good?
And do you know if it is possible to get one with a CD player incorporated, as that is what our current radio has.

Thanks

YES, excellent as you can get BBC7 and Oneword. Don't have CD player with it though, can play them on the computer or DVD player

I bought DH one for Xmas & so far not impressed. We've been pretty busy so he hasn't used it much, but on the few times we have tried, it says 'station not available' (or something like that). Have had it working once or twice, but we really need to sit down and suss it out - which I don't really think should be necessary. We live in the North East & website says reception SHOULD be ok. Don't know if that's as good as they'll say, just to cover themselves, or whether some places would get reception WILL be ok. Anyway, just to say that so far, not so good!

What make have you got Davros & Theresa ?

Bought one for dh and one for df (is that dad???) Christmas 2002, the Pure Evoke, about £100 and they've been brilliant. Both households use them everyday. In our case, we love radio 5 so it's been excellent getting rid of the rubbish mw signal. We're in the North Midlands and must be lucky with reception.

Don't know about the cd bit but I bought ours (along with other things) from the Simply Radios website and they seemed to have a selection of things and were very helpful so, if they didn't have what you wanted they might know if it exists at all!

We're got the Pure Evoke and it's fantastic. It's just got 1 speaker but they are available with 2, and it came top in a consumer test. I find that I listen to the radio throughout the day now, especially as I've discovered the wonders of digital channels like Oneword and BBC7.

Overall, I would highly recommend them and I know you can get them from Amazon for around £100. I've never heard of any with a CD player though...

Got an Intempo stereo one which is generaly good, but the BBC multiplex isn't always as crystal clear as it should be. Which may be down to where we are in relation to the transmitter - our TV signal has never been terribly strong. Otherwise it's fine. When I called them to query the issue they sent me a replacement immediately to check if the radio itself was the problem. Grundig do a DAB & CD portable - we didn't go for it as it looked a bit too plasticky. However, I can't understand why every other digital radio has to be "retro" designed in blond wood?

We also have a Pure Evoke and we all absolutely love it in this household and use it all the time. I would definitely recommend getting one.

Kayleigh · 15/02/2004 15:49

Bear, I know what you mean about the blond wood. And it just wouldn't go in our kitchen. The only one I saw yesterday in john lewis that I liked the look of was the Roberts Gemini 5, purely because it was all metal.

Epigirl, thanks for link I'm off to have a good look.

I got the Roberts Gemini 3 for Christmas, and it works really well on the stations it receives, but we won't be getting BBC 1-7 until the end of the year. Can get BBC Scotland and the Gaelic station though! Classic FM sounds good, and for those "Radio 4 " moments Onevoice is OK. Have to save my old FM radio for the Archers and FiveLive, though!

Davros · 15/02/2004 21:48

Ours is an Intempo one from Radio Times. I know there are better ones but this is fine and it was easy to get. Planning on getting another/better one soon, nephew visiting from Oz who runs gadget company

BosworthBear · 16/02/2004 09:39

We've also got a Pure Evoke, on offer at WHSmiths at £89 and about £69 in some Boots if they have any left over from Christmas. Quality is great, the only down side to mine is that it is only mains operated and therefore is difficult to have on in the bathroom (dh likes to listen to classic FM in the bath!!)

Kayleigh · 17/02/2004 21:52

Thanks for this ladies. Will check prices on the Pure Evoke as the Roberts Gemini 5 was £149 in John lewis and that seems like an awful lot of money for a radio.

Thanks again

You could just get cable/sky and listen to digital radio on the telly! More expensive I know and less attractive, but you get a lot more.

Kayleigh · 18/02/2004 13:54

Davros, we do have freefiew so i can get digital radio on our telly. But the telly is in lounge and i want the radio for the kitchen. You know for I'm baking a la Nigella
