Are homemade Yoghurts any good?

Hi,

I've just looked on the back of my daughter's yoghurts at the ingrediants list. Goodgrief! Are homemade ones better i.e. less crap? If so how do you make them? Can you recommend a yoghurt maker?

I have the electric one from lakeland.

All you then need is 2 tablespoons natural live yoghurt, UHT milk (can get organic in this), skimmed milk powder (optional) and the memory to switch it on before bedtime.

Tis very good, makes plenty and saves loads of cash. You can then flavour it with jams, chocolate powder etc.

Oh and you then save a bit of your homemade stuff to start the next batch.

You can also make it in a thermos flask.

Oh yes, home-made is excellent. But if you want to lazy and still avoid cr*p in bought yogurts, you could get plain yogurt and stir a teaspoonful of jam or conserve into it. Tastes just as yummy as bought fruit yogurts, especially if you get a good brand of jam, but has only fruit, sugar and pectin added.

OK, but... I don't like yoghurt so I'm not an expert but my kids seem to prefer the "creamy" ones which don't smell as strong as the "natural" ones. Will the homemade ones be like the creamy ones or the natural ones?

Depends what milk you use. Skimmed will make very thin tangy yogurt, semi will be thicker but still tangy, full fat will make creamy yogurt (just right IMO), Jersey or similar will make yogurt that IMO is too rich and creamy.

Easiyo is a yoghurt maker from Lakeland. They are brilliant. All natural and you can make all sorts - low-fat, natural, greek, yoghurt drinks etc.

The ingredients list on organic yogurts is less scary. I generally buy Rachels or Yeo in big pots, and mix it 50/50 with plain yogurt to cut down on sugar.

Plain yogurt doesn't have scary stuff in it. And you can add fruit compote, or honey, or maple syrup, or whatever you like to sweeten it.
