Evil smelling jacket! Help needed!!

I bought a jacket on Ebay and goodness knows where the owner had kept it because it's incredibly musty smelling. I put it in the washing machine with plenty of Comfort, took it out and it still smelled. Sprayed it with Febreeze and anchored it to the washing line in the gales all day - no luck. Now I've got it hanging indoors again and the smell is worse than ever. Something I'd kept in a damp shed for 2 years didn't smell as bad as this!! The jacket is made of polyester with a polyester padded filling, recommended wash 40 degrees. Anyone got any ideas what else I could try?

Maybe something has crawled inside and died, Mandy?
I am amazed that polyester will hold a smell so fiercely. (I wonder if that's why the previous owner got rid?)
You could try dry-cleaning? The chemicals might make a difference?
Or the old get-rid-of-vomit standby, bicarb - if you soaked it in a bucket in a strong solution of bicarb (eg 500g in one bucket - you can get big packets from the chemist) and then washed it...???
(And you could risk washing it a bit hotter since it's unusable anyway as it is!)

Good luck!

This reminds mywhenIleft home and my roommate was ahippy. When her Afghan coat got wet I made her leave it outside in the corridor.

My guess is that it's copious amounts of sweat that's been allowed to dry - what do you think? I'd agree that dry cleaning has to be worth a go, just to leave no stone unturned. You could also try soaking it in a bucket overnight....add some bicarb to the soaking water.

MandyD · 02/02/2002 15:02

Hmm, no its definitely not sweat because the jacket is brand new with tags on! I had it hanging in the kitchen overnight while my partner cooked a curry and the two smells seem to have cancelled each other out, so its not so bad now! But the jacket definitely doesn't suit me so once all the pong has gone it's going back on sale, or as a gift for a needy elderly person. Honestly, it didn't look that frumpy in the picture!!

Mandy or others, have you bought much stuff on Ebay?
Is it fun? Safe? Any good bargains?
Alternatively, anyone SOLD anything on ebay?

"One husband, slightly used, a bit fat, very grumpy but good with kids. Offers..."

Jasper - LOL - good ad but I've already got one

We've bought and sold all sorts of stuff on ebay with no problems so far - just remember the postage is added to the price! and beware of ebay addiction, although my mumsnet addiction leaves little time for it.

Is E-bay just an american based site ? sorry if i sound a bit dum, but it was all in dollars and the little tikes slide was over in Texas!! think it would be easier to pop to Toys-r-Us!!

dm2 · 03/02/2002 21:37

Rosilee · 04/02/2002 22:18

Jasper, you may joke about husband for sale, but yes some woman actually put herself up for sale at £250,000 and has had 2 offers! The woman in question has agreed to meet both bidders!!!

jasper · 05/02/2002 00:03

Blimey Rosilee, you mean I might actually get some hard cash for my old man?
