Hiya! A bit of a parp thread here probably but looking for books for a 5 year old girl (but into Star Wars & Power Rangers so NOT girlie) for her birthday. The kind that parents read out, not read alone ones.

She has all the Gruffalo type ones and Dr Seuss.

Any must-haves?

Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren - great fun and not "girly" despite being about a girl. There are 3 books about her.

Horrid Henry?

And there's another seies but forget who by, about a girl and her ponies.

The owl that was afraid of the dark and others in the series - can't remember the author

Those fairy ones - rainbow magic is it?

The Dahl books

Horrid Henry is very popular but I do worry that it will influence behaviour in an undesirable way... sometimes Henry seems to be too much of a hero, and Perfect Peter made out to be dull and boring when he has some wholesome interests.

The owl that was afraid of the dark and similar titles by Jill Tomlinson I think. Highly recommend the cat who wanted to go home by same author - excuse lack of capital letters but am typing with less than one hand!

littlerach · 10/06/2006 20:03

Yes, I know what you mean.

DD1 is v girly, and usually reads MMM, Naughty Little Sister, Mrs Pepperpot etc, but I persuaded her to try HH. Well, she found it ratehr funny, but did say he was a bit mean to PP!

What about some old Enid Blyton ones, the collections of short stories, or old faithfull Faraway tree series? They have soem excitement, but a mixture

chicaguapa · 10/06/2006 20:43

Will check with her mum if Pippi Longstocking would be suitable. I never read her as a child but have heard of her. I normally get the Rainbow Fairies for that age group but this little girl would have a fit! Grin

I don't think she'd like Horrid Henry. She gets very upset when people are unkind to someone else. She's quite an anxious child so we have to be careful what we buy. I thought Roald Dahl would be too much for her as well.

Have got the Owl who was afraid of the dark for DD but hadn't considered that as I thought it was a bit young. Such a difficult age 5, they seem to grow up so much when they start school!

Does Pippi have any scary type bits in it?

OP posts:
TooTicky · 10/06/2006 21:07

Absolutely no scary stuff. Pippi is the strongest girl in the world, lives on her own (except for her monkey Mr. Nilsson)in a little house in Sweden. Her horse lives on the porch and she has fun with the children who live next door. Her father is a cannibal king who lives far away. Lots of funny bits!

chicaguapa · 10/06/2006 22:48

Spoke to her mum and she's thrilled with the idea. She hopes it will teach her dd that there's nothing wrong with being a girl (she wants to be a boy as she thinks they're cool!)

Thanks for all the fab suggestions.
