End of year teacher gifts

There was a thread ages ago (maybe even a couple of years ago) about end of year presents for teachers.

I can't find it but would welcome suggestions from other parents or teachers about what they like receiving, otherwise it's going to be that ubiquitous box of chocolates (green and black's of course! Wink)

I have to agree with the no choclate line. But I would also be wary of flowers in the summer. Last year I got two lovely bunches but went on holday 2 days after school finished so had to give them to my MIL.
Wine is good How about several nice pens red and black so we can use them in registers! I love stuff in paperchase, how about a lovely note book to go with the pens?

Dd last year chose her own present for her teacher (prior to that she never cared enough!)
She got him calculator and pens, that had alphabet stickers with them, and spent ages sticking Mr xxxxx on each item.
Don't know what he thought of them though!!

Can I ask teachers whether they would appreciate something from WorldVision's alternative gift catalogue. I was thinking of things that fit in with their interests like seeds for the Head of Unit who loves gardening. I don't want to come over as "holier than thou" but surely they get an awful lot of wine and chocolates.

peachyClair · 10/06/2006 12:27

I'm not a teacher (yet- at Uni) but I used to get this from my Rainbows and I would loved an alternative gift.

I would also argue with Cod's no hand made stuff.... I used to love maybe a handmade card, although preferably accompanied by a decent guft Blush

cazzybabs · 10/06/2006 12:31

Another suggeston is a nice box of biscuits collectively for the staff room - or something nice to drink esp. in this heat (fizzy juice etc) and fruit?

The gift aid thing I would love to get!

KateF · 10/06/2006 12:51

Thanks for that peachyclair and cazzybabs-will go ahead. The dds are having fun trying to pick the most appropriate gifts. Dd1's teacher is the PE co-ordinator so I think she's getting some footballs Grin.

I love anything other than chocolates which sit in the cupboard until christmas. My favourites are things like flowers, wine and unusual gifts. Would love something from the WorldVision catalogue.

I'm on mat leave this year and I really missed all the little pressies and handmade cards, especially at christmas. Some presents are really thoughtful. Last year, at the end of the summer term I started my maternity leave and got lots of baby clothes, but my favourite was a tiny clay cradle with a mishapen baby in that one of the children made!

DD is in Reception and her teacher was newly qualified and dd's class was her first. I am thinking about buying one of those pictory kits on the home page or dd to present to her with her own artwork and writing. Dd has really learned so much this year (as must her teacher). It that a cheesy idea? Grin

Pinotmum · 10/06/2006 13:17

FOR dd to present ...

Some schools (mine for instance - boo) have a no gift policy...

TooTicky · 10/06/2006 21:40

I always think it's a bit like creeping. Besides, teachers are richer than meGrin

Blandmum · 10/06/2006 21:42

a nice box of tea, or packet of coffee would always go down well

JoPG · 10/06/2006 21:45

I really like the World Vision stuff (I have just taken a look on line)
Will probably do this for DS1's teacher and TA.

poppy101 · 10/06/2006 21:46

The best thing is a bottle of wine.

I used to love a bottle for a present at the end of the year and dh loves bottles of wine from his children.

If you didn't want to give wine, then I also loved having a bunch of nice flowers.

kipper22 · 11/06/2006 09:18

Shock tooticky! I bet the ones with a sahm for a wife aren't!

Finbar · 11/06/2006 09:31

Do you ever get thanked for the pressies you buy?
Cod and I have been having ad iscussin about this. I have been thanked ony ONCE in four years adn I think it stinks!!

(BTW the pressies were all nice ones - not hand made or mugs!!!!)

JILS · 11/06/2006 10:21

As a teacher, I always try to thank all the children who give me a prezzie. I used to do thank you letters, but the children who didn't give a prezzie always felt a bit left out. (I've worked in schools where some of the parents just couldn't afford luxuries like this!) Personally, though I love to get prezzies, a card or a letter from the child (or parent) just to say that they've enjoyed being in my class is fab! But, wine, chocolates and flowers are always welcome. Grin

aha! yes i think even a line in a reading not ebook is good

TooTicky · 11/06/2006 15:50

erm, kipper22, I wouldn't be too sure. Any teacher in this country must earn more than my dp who is in the early stages of running his own business, and I am a sahm of 4.

peachyClair · 11/06/2006 15:58

I bet he'll have more earnings potential is the business works though, whereas teachers are largely stuck with it.

TooTicky · 11/06/2006 16:03

Well, let's hope so, but nothing is certain and small businesses are vulnerable. Anyway, if we're being brutally honest, teachers do decide to become teachers. And presumably the end-of-year presents aren't the only things to make it all worthwhile.
