Parenting books

Right, I've got to spend £7 more on Amazon to qualify for free delivery and as a mega money-conscious mum I want to buy another book rather than fork out the extra for postage. I don't know which one though and I'll be here all day browsing Amazon if someone doesn't tell me what to buy!

What I'd like is a really good parenting book that I'll be able to dip into over the next few years and end up with it all thumbed and grubby cos it's that good. So any suggestions welcome!

I also thought it might be interesting to know what other mums have in their parenting book collections (and if you're anything like me then it's too many and veering on obsessive)

My collection so far is:

  1. Gina Ford's Contented Little Baby Book AND From Contented Baby to Confident Child AND Little Book of Weaning (yeah, I know)
  2. What to Expect When You're Expecting AND The First Year
  3. Babytalk
  4. Magic Trees of the Mind
  5. Baby Whisperer
  6. Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems

and I've just sold some others on Amazon too (and very lucrative this was too)

How about the mumsnet book, mums on babies?

Angeliz · 03/02/2004 10:38

I read a book called,
"How to talk so children will listen and listen so children will talk!", a few years ago, that was quite good
Short and sweet -must dash!+

I have

  1. Gina Ford's Contented Little Baby Book AND From Contented Baby to Confident Child AND Little Book of Weaning
  2. Baby Whisperer AND Baby Whisperer for toddlers
  3. Toddler Taming
  4. How to talk so kids will listen
  5. Secrets to happy children
  6. 1-2-3 Magic (kindly given by MNer!)
  7. The happiest baby
  8. The best friends guide to pregnancy
  9. The fat ladies club
  10. Mumsnet mums on babies
  11. The pocket parent

Im sure there is more!!! God, you would think Id be wonder parent after all that or is the fact that Im not the reason I have so many books trying to be!!

Not sure what to suggest for your book - I like the complete secrets to happy children by Steve Biddulph

mammya, I've got the mumsnet book out from the library already - highly recommended reading though and it's actually what led me to this website (and very pleased I am too about that)

My kids are 10 and 12 so probably a lot older than yours celandine! However I highly recommend How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Aleine Mazlish, and also another of their books Siblings Without Rivalry (just reading that at the moment - v good so far).

HTTSKWLALSKWT (can't possibly type that title out again) is relevant for kids of all ages from toddlers to teenagers - it's really helped me to transform the way I communicate with my two - resulting in a less stressed me and a more harmonious home for everyone. Wish I'd read it years ago

I've noticed a lot of people mention 'How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk' on other threads so I'm going to look at it on Amazon now. At the moment it's between that and Steve Biddulph's 'Happy Children'.

The Steve Biddulph one I have is a complete book which has both "Happy Children" and "More Secrets of Happy Children" I think its called "The Complete Secrets of ............"

I've just read Libby Purves' Nature's Masterpieces, which is about slightly older kids than mine (starts at about 4). It's a great read, bit of advice and stories and ideas rather than a "do it this way" approach. It's really got me looking forward to the years to come, rather than panicking and hoping I can go to sleep and wake up when the kids leave home.
