Bunk beds - to buy or not to buy

We (hopefully) are about to buy our first ever house, which also means buying a huge amount of furniture - basically everything! DS would really like a bunk bed and we've seen one at a good price with drawers fitted all the way down one side and a 3rd pull out bed under the bottom bunk. DS is an only child so we've no real need to get a bunk bed. I was wondering, is it difficult to get up and make the bed, to tend to a sick child when in a top bunk, to read a bedtime story etc etc TIA

Can you tell me where you are getting this bunkbed from? I'm looking for one and like the idea of storage and a third, hidden bed

Just use fitted sheets they are alot better to fit to the top bunk.
If he was ill he could always sleep on the pull out bed.
He might in the future have a friend for a sleep over.

We got bunk about 3 months ago. I have fitted sheets, and apart from having to stand on the bottom rung of the ladder it's fine.
We read bedtime stories downstairs to all 3 kids, but I do climb into the top bunk to cuddle ds1 when he goes to bed.
If you don't really need bunks then there are some great mid- or high- sleepers around, some have an armchair / pull out bed for sleep overs.

Erm, Honeymum, I'm in Brazil, I think it might be too far for you to come bunkbed shopping.

Yes they are a pain to change, DS has one of the high loft beds from Ikea, I have to stand on a stool to tuck him in and I can't get hold of the mattress to pull it up to get the sheet on. Thank goodness DS is old enough to help now and he scramble up to the end to tuck the corners on.

When they are ill it is a bit of a nightmare nothing like vomit coming from a top bunk, DS never wants to sleep up there when he is ill because it is so far to the loo, so he goes in mine and I sleep on the sofa. Plus he has bee a bit of bed wetter so I was forever changing it.

Plus it was to big for DS's room so it was at granny's for ages, but having said that it gives him loads of room as he has his telly and his desk underneath and a bit of extra floor space, so if you are short of space then go for it otherwise have another think.

PS DS had to come into his sisters bed for stories as you would have to crawl up there beside them or balance on a stool mmh!

Hmm, I can see I might to have to some serious thinking here and possibly come up with an exciting alternative. I remember as a child I was desperate for a bunk bed, never got one though, I can see why.
Hi Suzy, missed you last night/yesterday morning.

What about the \link{http://www.allkids.co.uk/childrens-mid-sleepers-and-storage-beds.shtml\cabin/ midi beds}, they often have a chest of drawers and a pull out desk, but aren't as high.

Albert · 24/05/2006 00:17

Ooo, they look good, bet I can't them out here though Sad, even a bunk bed seems a bit radical here.

You must have an Ikea, everywhere has them Grin. Ok maybe not.

Albert · 24/05/2006 00:47

'Fraid they haven't cracked the Brazilian market yet, surely it can't be too long now.

Hi albert
do get the fitted sheets, I was too penny pinching to do so and rue it everytime I have to change them.

I saw that article about the killings in Sao Paolo Shock. Brasilia is relatively tranquil I hope.

Am going to try and track down some proper black beans today and do a bit of faux Latin American cooking. How do you cook yours?

earlgrey · 24/05/2006 05:53

We got some hideously expensive bunk beds from a company called Alspace (sp?) in the hope that dds would share a room. And do you know what? The only one that will sleep in them is the one that's allowed to use the top bunk. They have to take it in turns, the other sleeping in what should be the spare room. So it didn't fulfil our expectations at all Sad. I don't know if we were just unlucky, but it might be something you want to ascertain before you invest in them!
