thinking about our summer hoiday abroad... worried about having to continually apply suncream to ds (as he will be in and out of water all day), and wondered about P20...

have you used it? what did you think? where did you buy it etc?

tried it, didn't like it.
wouldn't use it on child - too easy to miss a bit.

The factor isn't high enough. I've used it on me though.

I would recommend the Piz Buin once a day, goes up to a factor 30. Only £5 in Savers, normally about £12

Agree with MaryBS - you need a higher factor, like the Piz Buin.

p20 only protects againest UVA or UBA can't remember which, and it stains clothes and you have to put it on over an hour before going in the sun. piz buin however is excellent it doesn't stain smells nice and only needs applying 20 mins before exposure, we have used it for the last three holidays and my three haven't burnt at all, plus getting suncream on three kids with autism is an extreme sport, once a day is fab. get it from savers for a fiver, or from ebay

P20 IS excellent at stopping you burning all day (I've used it sailing in the Caribbean, where there's no escaping the sun, and I burn easily).

HOWEVER it only protects from UVB rays, and there are now concerns that the UVA rays (which don't cause burning) can cause more 'internal' skin damage leading to melanoma. (I've had malignant melanoma, so know a lot about this!)

So I'd go for a broad spectrum 5-star protection offering UVA and UVB protection. Boots Soltan has a Once product (just trying this today!) and Ultrasun once a day protects from both - haven't tried this yet, but heard good reviews.

HTH

thanks everyone. i hadnt realised there were other once-a-day suncreams on the market.

so the piz buin one is good? enough for a toddler?

Think somebody on another thread said they'd contacted Piz Buin and asked, and they said yes, it was suitable for children.

GeorginaA · 12/05/2006 13:16

Ultrasun works better on our kids - it works for both UVA and UVB, is factor 28, suitable for sensitive skin and lasts all day. It's also more of a gel rather than an oil and doesn't stink, so our kids will actually wear it Grin

We put it on ds1 in the morning before school so that when he goes out to play at lunchtime he'll be okay.

Laura032004 · 12/05/2006 13:26

We use the Piz Buin on DS, and have since he was 18m old. It works really well - have never burned using it. Just be careful if you're in water a lot though, it will need reapplying then. Nivea do a good kids suntan lotion - factor 50 or 60, which is waterproof or resistant, and really is! I tend to put this on hands and feet which are always getting wet in the summer.

I've been burnt wearing P20, in the UK!!!! And thats without going in the water and potentially washing it off!

ja9 · 12/05/2006 20:05

lots of you mention using the sun cream in the uk - i want to use it abroad with peace of mind, any of you done that?

I have bought some baby Soltan cream from boots (2 for 1) factor 50 once a day lasts 8 hours.

My huge problem is that our 3 year old refuses point blank to have cream of any description applied ...

ja9 · 13/05/2006 14:43

thanks waswondering, thats kind of you but i have bought a couple of those suits.

i've bought a couple of bottles of piz buin. think i might use it for myself too...

thanks for your input everyone.

I always use the sunsuits on my children, although they're getting harder to find for a 6yo in 9yo clothes (managed to in Adams in the end!)

jellyjelly · 15/05/2006 17:06

you can get a once a day from boots which is factor 40 enough for 6 hours in the sun as are the other one a day they arent really once a day more like every 6 hours a day. This is where alot of people get caught out as its not one application but one every 6 hours and you have to put them on 90 minutesbefore going out into the sun.
