LJH · 20/01/2002 12:44

I am looking to buy a highchair and have narrowed it down to three:

Kingswood hi-low

Graco stages

Mamas & papas Futura

My main needs are, needs to be compact especially for storing as we don't have the space and also multi position, would also like to use it for son to sit and play so comfort is v important

Have read the reviews and would quite like peoples opinions before i make an expensive mistake!!

Thanks
Lynne

Hi, I don't know if anyone is still here, last message was January! I've just joined because I was trying to find a web site that might make trays that fit the Tripp Trapp high chair. I was at a baby group last week and heard of a friend of a friend whose son was rocking the chair so violently against the table that he pushed himself over backwards. He was rushed to A&E and thankfully all was ok.

Anyway to cut to the chase I called up Stokke who told me that although they don't make trays and have no plans to do so in the future, they have heard rumours of a company in the States who make them??? Anyone heard of anything like this? My son is already pretty strong at 9 months so I am keen to look into it.

Must fly more banana to mop up.

Any ideas/thoughts on the tripp trapp safery issues very welcome, thank you

JoW - I'm pretty sure when I was looking thru the Tesco's catalogue I saw a highchair on the same lines as the TrippTrapp which had a tray - don't know whether this would be available separately tho. Sorry not to be of more use!

SueDonim · 10/05/2002 11:19

I've seen chairs similar to Trip Trapp chairs but with trays, in supermarket restaurants. Maybe you could check some out and if you see one ask the manager where they acquired it from.

I'm amazed that baby was able to tip the chair. Ours is so rock solid on the floor I can't see how it could be done. He must be a Superbabe!!

I'm interested to know if anyone has recent experience of latest high chairs on the market? Is the IKEA one still the best cheap option? I have seen a plastic version of the Tripp Trapp chair in the Argos catalogue - has anyone bought one? I'm not sure the booster seats will work for me as the dining chairs have thick fitted cushions so the seat is not flat. Any tips appreciated.

oxocube · 02/08/2002 12:55

LKM, We recently bought the cheapy IKEA one and its great; really easy to clean, basic, but hey, its a high chair!!

bea · 06/08/2002 11:34

we've got a handy sitt for later when dd is more able to sit at table without lurching! but we also have the ikea cheapy cheap cheap! and i must say it is a bargain! brilliant for cleaning, inoffensive to the eye! and although it doesn;t fold away it comea apart and can fit quite nicely into the car!

if you've got the room in the house to stay up! get it!!!!

we have a tripp trapp, v pleased with it as it encourages fantastic posture (none of the slouching I've seen in smallish toddlers/babies who sit in those plastic high chairs designed for all sizes) I think because of how you adjust it as the child grows - ie move foot rest so feet are flat, and the seat so it reaches just so far along baby's thighs. also I love the idea of dd being at the table with us rather than on her own plastic tray. I've never found it that hard to clean but if you're a bit of a slut like me you need to get a strong bristle brush and some muscles!

Lois · 06/08/2002 13:40

Hi LKM, We have a cheapy IKEA one (actually ours is my best baby bargain as I bought it in pristine condition for 5GBP at an NCT sale ). Anyway, I'm delighted with it, its a doddle to clean, the tray is the same height as our table so ds can sit next to me and it is so light that I can move it even with ds in it. As it doesn't adjust I did used to need to put a folded towel behind ds to help him to sit. But the best thing about it is it is white and so doesn't clash with my kitchen! So go for cheap - and spend the money you saved on something nice!

And talking of cleaning why do restaurants never bother to clean their highchairs? Never mind putting the straps through a wash-cycle now and then. It drives me mad! Grrrr!

bayleaf · 06/08/2002 21:13

Just wanted to agree with Lois - I was sceptical - but had it on loan from a neighbour ( It had been in her shed and was FILTHY - but it fits in a dishwasher when dismantled!!!)if money is toght try the IKEA cheapo.

PamT · 06/08/2002 21:19

I wish I'd had an IKEA cheapo one but they had withdrawn them when I went to buy because they had a design problem with the safety strap. I ended up buying a cheap folding one from Mothercare but the straps didn't detach and were always really grubby looking no matter how much I scrubbed. I think most highchairs are designed by men - they have to be because men don't have to do the cleaning! Women would incorporate detachable straps and trays and washable, removable seat pads/liners.

Tesco sell a wooden highchair in the tripp trapp style with a removable tray
www.tesco.com/babystore/category.asp?6640480
Downside, its' £99

Bozza · 06/08/2002 22:06

Unlike PamT I bought an expensive one from Mothercare, but just like PamTs the straps don't detach and get filthy. Probably though my high chair has got more padding and folds to trap food etc. Don't do it...

Lollypop · 06/08/2002 22:30

The most important thing is to get a chair with a removable tray, then it is much easier to get your little one in and out.

JayTree · 06/08/2002 23:42

I totally agree with that last comment - I wish to God someone had told me about getting a removable tray - I am now stuck with a fiddly chair, tricky to put DD in and out and awkward to clean the seat easily. My friend got one of those cute "cube" chairs that start off as a high chair and then can be used later as a small chair and separate table - same price and much more sensible.

bayleaf · 07/08/2002 12:47

I can't begin to conceive of a high chair which DOESN'T have removable straps - well actually I can, the one we used on holiday was like that and it was brand new when we used it - but by the end of one week the straps were an 'attractive' orangey brown and I had a fun half hour sloshing bleach on them so that I wasn't too embarrassed to give it back!
DON'T EVEN CONSIDER ONE WHICH DOESN'T HAVE REMOVABLE STRAPS AND TRAY!!!!!

codswallop · 01/01/2005 20:57
