Sun Cream at School

I'm sure this has been done loads but how to you manage with keeping sun cream on child while at school? My ds1 is in reception and is very fair skin and even though I am putting on a high factor before school he is still catching the sun (and it is not even full summer yet!!!). Does anyone know of a really good sunscreen that lasts all day? The policy at school is that they have to put it on themselves if you want to reapply but i dont really think he is capable of that yet.

I prefer my kids to have sun hats and long sleeves and school them about staying in the shade as I feel there's good cause not to trust sunb cream.

However, if you have faith in creams then you could always get the sun cream which is available in wipes and teach your ds to put it on himself.

There was a thread a while ago \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1012&threadid=169433&stamp=060503180558\here}[smile]. Various suggestions. HTH.

Its mentioned in the other thread, but I like the Piz Buin once a day cream. And as mentioned in that thread, Savers have it for £5, instead of its more usual £11-12. They do it in various factors as well, up to a 30.

I called them and asked if they'd recommend it for small children, and they said they did.

Orinoco · 11/05/2006 21:39

MaryBS, it doesn't stain does it? That's what out me off these kind of things in the past, I've heard that P20 is awful...

JackieNo · 11/05/2006 21:40

The Piz Buin one is a bit yellow, but no more so than other sun creams, IMO.

I bought my 2 (Reception and Year 1 age) a little roll on Sunscreen from Boots. They have to have a letter explaining to the teacher how to apply it- Duh!

I spent a small fortune (well, £43) on 2 bottles of Ultrasun yesterday. It's around £22 a bottle but does last all day and has UVA and UVB protection. Yesterday and today I've covered my 3 in it and then not applied again (ds1 at school anyway) and they've not caught the sun at all so it must work. Last week, before I got round to it, they deffo got a glow (not red or burnt by any means - ds2 and ds3 are darker skinned anyway but ds1 is strawberry blonde and very fair). But this week, nothing.

It's really easy to rub in, unlike other creams - so far I'm very impressed (and a good job too at that price Grin)

PeachyClair · 11/05/2006 22:01

The 12 hour Boots factor 50 was on two for one last week, so worked out as £5 a bottle, and if you think about it this sort of cream will go a lot further

hulababy · 11/05/2006 22:06

Ultrasun is on special offer in Waitrose - or it was last week. Once a day stuff.

For school if you don't use the once a day cream, how about suncream wipes for your child to apply themselves.

hullabaloo · 11/05/2006 22:08

I spoke to my son's teacher about this today and asked what the situation was regarding hats, suncream etc. Hats are encouraged, suncream on before school or they do it themselves. If you wish the school to be involved in putting suncream on your child you must put it in writing.

pashmina · 11/05/2006 22:44

I always use PIZ BUin spf 30, last year there were loads of 2 for 1 offers, but none at the mo. what are the alternatives and where on special offer???

pashmina · 11/05/2006 22:45

that is the all day long versions (great for school)

MaryBS · 12/05/2006 07:43

Its never stained to my knowledge. Texture and colour v. similar to normal suncreams, a creamy white, not like P20.

As I said, £5 is a good deal at Savers, still beats the 2 4 1 deals.

NannyL · 12/05/2006 09:16

My sister has recently bought some all day sun cream... when i read the instructions on the back it said it worked for 4 hours Shock

To me that is not all day, and if applied before school say at 8.30 would mean protection would have stopped by 12.30 ie lunch time Shock

Just to point out so anyone with all day suncream may like to check how long all day is!

PeachyClair · 12/05/2006 14:45

The Soltan one is 12 hours

WigWamBam · 12/05/2006 14:58

The Soltan one I bought seems to say that it's 12 hours ... but it's not. When you read the blurb on the back it says to apply every 2 hours. I don't know what the 12 hour thing applies to, there is nothing on the pack at all to state that it means you only apply it once a day.

PeachyClair · 12/05/2006 15:05

from my limites understanding, it takes 12 hours to wear off but only provides 2 hours in-the-sun protection- i think that is how these creams work- but that is adequate at Sa,'s age, though Stirly plays more outdoors. Not a lot I can do tho, bar provide a hat, which I do.

MaryBS · 12/05/2006 17:28

Piz Buin's box states quite clearly 3 times on its box that its effective for 10 hours. My children are very fair and I was a bit dubious, but they survived last summer using this product, even when out in the sun, on the beach all day.
I would recommend reapplying if playing in the sea/water a lot though.

Mfer · 13/05/2006 16:59

Give them a kids stick to put clip to their bag which they can easily reapply at lunchtime - I use this one you can get it in Boots and tesco! See \link{http://www.bananaboat.co.uk/Kids_Stick.html\this}

PeachyClair · 13/05/2006 17:07

There's a review in The Times today.

SoupDragon · 13/05/2006 17:11

I use the Piz Buin one.
