If so, could you tell me what you had done and how much it cost? We've had a couple of quotes and I'm pretty Shock at how high they are. Also, how big the area was that you had done.

TIA

me only had concrete because so expensive, it cost £3000 and its 10ft by 10ft

Aero · 09/05/2006 18:50

Us too - similar to trace2, although cost around £2,400.

brimfull · 09/05/2006 18:51

will keep an eye on this as we need to widen ours. We've decided against block paving as I would never weed it.
A friend had a quote for tarmac and it was £1700 ,drive is about two cars long and wide enough for one car at the mo.The quote was for it to be widened by about 4 feet.

trace2 · 09/05/2006 18:57

Aero wher do you live? in yorkshire its surposed to be cheaper

Toothyboy · 09/05/2006 18:59

We have a man booked to start ours on Monday. It's costing £3.5k to clear the area and block pave it. It's 63 sq m. (according to his quote!).

charliecat · 09/05/2006 18:59

Our neighbours have done thiers themselves with bricks in a fancy pattern. No idea of cost but a shed load of bricks and a load of sand were used :)

Aero · 09/05/2006 20:08

I'm in Kent trace.

Thanks very much. Cannot believe how much they charge - is it really that much work? Anyone able to tell me how long it took & how many people were working on it?

I paid one man (who I know and trust and worked like a trojan) £100 per day labour. Took him 7 or 8 days to dig out my garden and lay the concrete. He did a really professional job, and considering it's not fancy paving it looks great. I paid for all the materials as he needed them, and we needed two skips (about £350 for both) to take away the rubble.

The big expense was the contracter who came to drop the kerb and lay tarmac.! £900 plus over £100 for permission/inspection from the council in the first place. The council were going to charge up to £1500 though, so £900 was cheap by those standards.

Aero · 09/05/2006 20:56

ps - he used a pick-axe, a shovel, a few other manual tools, a cement mixer and a lot of backwork.

trace2 · 10/05/2006 08:59

my took a week it was very cold in feb, and mine was done by a digger that took a day to dig up the rest was easy, then when it was finished the buider left and some one walked on itSad

speedymama · 10/05/2006 09:32

My friend in Guildford recently had their drive done (paved) and it is large enough for 2 cars. The first quote she had was for £11000Shock. After I told her that we paid £17000 6 years ago, she shopped around and managed to get it done for £3000.

mythumbelinas · 10/05/2006 10:01

We did ours ourselves last yr. Cost about 3500.
We had quotes ranging from 4500 to 8000!
It can fit 3 cars
We hired one guy, who worked extremely hard, but he sometimes hired 2-3 guys to help him out.
Had to completely dig up the whole thing, inc plants, cement path and old wall.
Hired our own skips (needed 3) and tools
Bought our own paving, cement, etc
He also did new walls with iron fencing around the drive too.
Took 3 weeks as it was winter and would rain or snow!
Drop down kerb we applied for the yr before took almost a yr before council came. Cost 1500!!

plug · 10/05/2006 10:02

This is all really useful, thanks.

Mythumbelinas, does the 3500 include the 1500 for the council?

wish it did, but no, that was separate.
Another family in the neighbourhood looking to do their driveway liked our driveway enough to ask the guy to do theirs too

Orinoco · 10/05/2006 22:17

We've just had some quotes this week actually :

£3400 for block paving,
£3600 for tarmac with block paving surround
£3880 for pressed concrete.

Seems a lot....

brimfull · 11/05/2006 19:59

Has anyne got a resin bound drive. It looks like gravel but it doesn't move iyswim. It'is used for things like cycle paths I think. We're interested in this but don't know anyone who's had it.

marthamoo · 11/05/2006 20:04

Why did I just assume this was a euphemism for something rude? I'm in an odd mood tonight...

suzi2 · 11/05/2006 20:33

OMG - our neighbours own a paving company and are offering to monoblock our 2 and a bit car driveway for just under £1000. Apparently all the groundword is done though as the houses are new builds. We thought that was extortionate... but I now realise it's a bargain! Grin

suzi2 · 11/05/2006 20:37

correction- DH says the £1000 was just for a 1 car one. So closer to £2000 I would say. They say that it's half their normal price.

suzi2 · 11/05/2006 20:39

oh and another thing Grin... we currently only have a gravel drive so there isn't much work to do to clear it.
